Ouch...not sure I understand why you feel real runners shouldn't have toenails? Between cardio and the jarring/jam stops in racquetball I don't cover as much ground per week as you by any stretch, but I've never experienced this problem even when I ran cross country back in the 70's. Would have thought shoes had gotten *better*, not worse at this point.

I didn't say that real runners "shouldn't", its just that marathoners seldom do have toenails. Pound the pavement for 3 hours 5-6 times a week on concrete and regardless of what shoe you buy, your toes will pay the price. I've talked to alot of people who do MAJOR DISTANCE RUNNING and all seem to agree; the toenails bite the dirt.

I doubt I'd ever find out...shin splints would cripple me first. I run on either the treadmill or the new rubberized tracks (nice!) I'm still not sure why the toenails would go...rubbing against the top of the shoe? That can't be healthy, whatever the reason.....

Yeah, partly its from the shoes, but mostly its from the repeated bashing your toes get from smacking the pavement for hours.

That's why asphalt is MUCH PREFERRED to concrete. And if you can find it, a dirt trail is even better. Much easier on the joints, including the toes.

Personally, since I've given up running on concrete, my toes like me a whole lot better. On the rare occasion that I hit a little concrete during my long runs, I can almost hear my joints/toes cry out for MERCY.

          Concrete is for CARS!!

I can't show you my "wounds" as it is along my bra line. Hubbie says no pic. Major chafing, but now armed with vasaline before and some accuratley named lotion after I am doing better. Also my thighs are smaller now, so they don't rub together as badly either.
