  • Trying to start jogging...questions

Hi, I went out last night and tried to go jogging. After 15 minutes I came back in the house. I was so exhausted. I can't believe how tiring jogging is. I was more tired from jogging 15 minutes then I am from doing arobics w/weights for an hour.

So I guess I am wondering, for those that are runners, did you have a hard time starting up, or did you just get out there and run? Did you start up slow and steadily build up your resistance? How often did you get out there and how how many minutes would you run at a time?

Also my knees are really sore this morning, is this normal? I do have to be careful with my knees when I do certain motions. I hope that jogging is still an option for me, sore knees and all. I'm stuck in a "comfy weight" and I hope that jogging will make it easier to get out of it.

Check this link out....every letter is pure gold to someone just starting out running

You'll find that properly fitted shoes will alleviate TONS of physical pain and fatigue. Find a store in your area and have your stride evaluated and they'll get you the shoes you need.

The other die-hard runners will be along with tons of great advice for you - but these two things are what got me going. HTHS!

I started the couch to 5k from coolrunning.com last week. Having a set "schedule" helps keep me accountable.

Sounds like you're going way too fast. Try a real slow shuffle...like if you went any slower you would be walking.
It took me 6 months to work up to running a whole mile but if you ran for 15 mins you probably already did a mile

The C25K is a great plan I highly recommend it.
For me running produces the highest heart rate of any activity I do.

15 minutes of jogging is a huge accomplishment. Most people have to start off with 30 second burts of running. It's deceiving, how HARD running is, especially if you're someone who regularly works out. You could probably bike for an hour, or do the eliptical for 30 minutes, but then you start running and it's like your muscles are made of glue. Don't be ashamed to start off real slow and just build from there.

the hardest thing to learn is how to run slow. Keep at it and you will be fine. Running is SO rewarding.

I know exactly what your talking about. I regularly walk 3 miles, I do weights, I do the eliptical for an hour, rowing, rollerblading, whatever. But after only 15 minutes of jogging my leg muscles are so sore. My quads, my hip flexor, everything from the waist down hurts. I guess this means it's working.

Thanks everyone for the great tips, I will go out and try again tomorrow, i'll try to go slow and longer...i'll keep you posted.

                Re: Trying to start jogging...questions

Another Tip. I really want to be jogging again. I have been walking about 3 miles a workout since January. Just recently I have started to incorporate jogging.

The way I do it is: I will walk for 5-10 min to warm up. Then I jog (slowly) for 2 minutes then walk for 2 min, and alternate. If I need a longer walk, I'll walk for four minutes then jog for 2 min. This works really well for me!

You're right, running/jogging works muscles that don't get worked when I walk, do elliptical etc. I love what jogging does for my body and I can't wait to be able to jog for three or four miles like I used to!

Keep it up, but start is slowly so you don't hurt yourself (or your knees)

What a great start!! As Betty will surely be along to say. Go SLOWLY. Most people start our too quickly and get injured or burnt out. The only race you are in now is from your door to the curb. Once you are there take it easy, it will get easier and with that you will get faster. I would rather say I can run 9 miles than I can run a mile in 6 min.!!

                    Re: Trying to start jogging...questions

Thanks guys, I went out this morning and did my first session of training for a 5K. I'm really proud of myself, I have always stuck by the idea that running/jogging wasn't for me. Well I still don't know if I'm a dedicated lifer or not, but I am willing to devote 6 weeks to see how I like it. It was slow going today, the 60 seconds of running while easy at first got harder as I kept at it (surprising). During the parts that I was jogging I kept repeating in my head; run, run, run. I can't imagine that in 6 weeks I'll be able to run 3 miles. But we'll see won't we.

Oops, typo 9 weeks. Well I'll stick to it for the 9 weeks, it would be nice to run easily 3 miles.

it won;t take long to get to that stage, though it will still not be easy...better to say comfortable.
