  • Presenting the slowest swimmer of all time:

    Hi, it's me.

I can't believe how slow I was. I've never swam laps before but have always heard it was great excercise, seeing as how I was really sore from walking/jogging I decided to give it a try. I swam 1 lap in 1 minute. It was kind of funny actually there were these two pro swimmers in the lanes next to me and they were going so fast, doing all the fancy moves and me just chugging along, gasping for air, and breathing heavy.

I originally wanted to do 60 minutes but after 2 laps I realized that there was no way I was going to get that much in, instead I said I would do 30 laps. I did 26 when I realized that if I did anymore they would have to drag me out of the pool. Then I went into the sauna for 5 minutes and the spa for another 10. As I was walking out of the pool area I noticed a sign, looks like 24.5 laps is 1/2 a mile. So I am actually kind of proud of how many laps I did. I actually swam 1/2 a mile today. Oh Happy Day

    Congrats!!!

I do water aerobics, usually 6 days a week, and sometimes I will do a few laps at the end to cool down... I am terribly slow and have terrible form! In fact, I'm DYING to find a good website to teach me how to work on my form.... I wear contacts and prefer the backstroke and I kind of stink at it!

I learned a back breaststroke (uses the frog legs and similar arm motions, but on your back) when I was in physical therapy about 8 years ago. I was doing that stroke because it really helps my lower back pain and I kid you not, I look up and the lifeguards (there were 2 standing together) were POINTING AND LAUGHING. I flipped over and did some freestyle and was SO MAD!!

But ya know what, even if we look like big geeks in the water, at least we'll be skinny geeks and not FAT ones!

    GOOD JOB!

        Yoly...

I swim sometimes... at the pool in AZ, I was so proud, I had done 20 laps adn was SURE that must have been a mile... I thought I was going to drown, I was breathing so hard... I asked the Fitness Director later, and 26 laps is a quarter mile... I was so sad!

Why is it that swimming feels like so much farther than it is? (should that be further? that is bothering me!)

Seriously, you can swim for EONS and get out and you've gone, what, maybe maybe maybe 1/3 of a mile? Dude, I could bike that in 2 minutes! Or walk that in 6 minutes! [inserting Napoleon Dynamite quote: "I could make that much money in like 5 seconds."]

And my fave quote of all: If swimming is supposed to be such good exercise for your body, explain whales.

Speedy, I go to the YMCA. It is $52/month here for the family and it has FREE childcare up to 1 hour 15 minutes, so I can drop the kidlets off, go work out for an hour, insanely fast shower and dress, and pick them up I *love* the childcare there!

Oh no, I'm sorry that really stinks. I felt like I had gone 10 miles by the time I was done, swimming is tough.

Kimberly - I was 15 laps in and thinking of throwing in the towel when I saw this gorgeous girl walk by in a black bikini, it wasn't too revealing but OMG, her body, you could see the muscle definition in her body as she walked. I thought, see that's what swimming will get me so I kept right on. You are right, one day we will be skinny geeks.

I can't wait for the day when I show up at that pool in a bikini and make all the little boys drool. I was drooling today, lol those swim guys are really hot!

Y is good for families with kids, and the prices vary by state. The single rate in my state is just over 20 a month... not too bad for full facility use. Some places, some Y's and city pools/rec centers sell swim passes.. where you cant use the gym or facilities, just hte pool.. have seen those that are about a dollar of a buck fifty a visit.

I went to take the kiddos snack because I forgot to give it to them this morning, and they were out swimming in the Y pool, where the camp is. I was so tempted to say, HEY It's five oclock somewehre, get my suit out of the car and jump in.. instead, here I am, back in my hole. I love swimming.

Kimberly...I am sorry that happened to you. Karma is a bit** though so they'll get theirs somewhere down the line.

I love lap swimming. I don't live near a Y though so I have to go the local pool. I might start going to another one nearby though because they have hot tub, sauna and exercise equipment. I haven't been able to go all summer though because of my husband's work schedule and having the kids here. If I could afford child care it wouldn't be an issue but o'well. And I can't take my boys with me because I refuse to let them in the men's locker room unsupervised. When I push myself too hard when I'm lap swimming I flip over onto my back for a little break and find that I can go further. I also wear flippers and start with a warm up by using the kickboard. School starts Sept 12th so I'll be back in the water soon!

For those of you interested just plug in where you live & find out about the pools closest to you! This website rocks!

                          http://www.swimmersguide.com

Anyow I swim. Swimming is my core exercise
                          2500 Metres a day 5 days a week (1&/2 Miles)
I do this in around 1 hour in a 50 metre olympic pool which means a good steady pace & flip turns at every turn.

Health & exercise professionals all agree that swimming is the ultimate all aerobic, calorie burning exercise. The water is the most pefectly designed workout machine in the world, the faster you swim the more resistance you get. Slow down & the resistance decreases

It is totally nonimpact (no injuries) endurance building activity & if you ramp up the speeds it becomes anerobic strength building too. Swimming rocks & is a great starting point for severly obese people to get them exercising again w/o injury

I do also run, lift, use a Nordic Track as part of my regular program BUT swimming is my CORE exercise! For all around health it is the BEST of them all. I have been swimming at my current pool for close to 10 years & it is 80% the same people in the morning that I started w/10 years ago.

It is an activity that you can continue to do as you get older, Nobody runs or lifts or goes to the gym consistantly for decades(trust me maybe a couple of years or 5 years max) but regular swimmers do keep it up & the number of extremely healthy older people you see at the pool is because they have been swimmers for decades as their core activity too!
I try to take one day at a time but sometimes several days attack me at once

However, can I please send a reminder to all "older male swimmers". I don't care how fit you are.... if you wear a speedo, keep it colored.... not flesh toned. It is just way too raunchy for words!

Seriously, this guy was wearing a BAGGY flesh colored speedo and when he got out, you could see that it had a 2" or so HOLE IN THE BACK! I was ROLLING with laughter (not pointing and laughing, mind you!! and I waited till he was in the locker room, and then dh & I lost it!) .... (not the most mature girl here).

I spend TOO much time in the pool each week right now, with water aerobics 1 hour a day plus we take the kiddos up to the pool a few days a week.... my hair/skin are DEAD!

I should get back to swimming. I love swimming, but the chlorine in the water in public pools triggers my asthma, that's why I prefer swimming in the ocean. (And the fees are pure robbery).

Anyway, that would mean buying a new swimsuit (no money for that right now) since the old one had its last days somewhen in 2004. I just cannot envision myself buying a new swimsuit. Not if the only option is breathing chlorine, that is. *shiver* *goosebumps*

mamakimberly: water aerobics are really fun and exhausting, too ) And gentle on the joints...
