Motivation - Good Reasons to Get up and Run

There are many good reasons to run. However, there will always be days when you have to force yourself out the door. In those moments, just think about how good you will feel after a run, and remind yourself of the consequences of not going running. After all, running is medicine for your whole body, and here are some of the positives:

    1. THE BRAIN:

Running doubles the oxygen supply to your brain, keeping you awake and thinking clearly. Running also increases your brain metabolism, which leads to an increase in learning capacity and creativity. (in other words, IT MAKES YOU SMART!)

    2. IMMUNE SYSTEM:

Running increases the body's immune system, which leads to a better resistance against many infections and lowers the risk of cancer. (in other words, IT KEEPS YOU HEALTHY!)

    3. THE MUSCLES

Running increases the number of mitochondria, the power plants of the muscle, which improes muscle metabolism. New vessels grow within the muscles to improve blood supply (in other words, IT MAKES YOU STRONG!)

    4. HEART AND CIRCULATION:

The heart gets stronger and more powerful. The resting heart rate decreases and the heart's ability to recover from stress improves. The viscosity of the blood is reduced along with the blood pressure. Running has the same effect as a mild anti-hypertensive medication. In addition, blood fat, including chesterol declines. (in other words, it keeps you off drugs NATURALLY!)

    5. THE LUNGS:

Lungs get more powerful. Ventilation and blood circulation through the lungs improve. The whole body is flushed with oxygen. (in other words, it gives you AIR!)

IS ANYONE OUT THERE MOTIVATED TO RUN?????????????????????

Ugh, what about the part where it makes my bursitis flare up and I can't move for a week?? (I fractured my patella in a car accident 9 years ago and have mega knee issues with bursitis)

    Sorry

Seriously, I'm a huge elliptical fan because it gives me those benefits without the knee pain!

Working out, regardless of the form it takes, is awesome for the body and soul!

Hey you forgot that it fills you with pride. It makes you happy. It gives you something to accomplish(stay at home mommie, not a lot of goals or "projects") If your significant other is into red and sweaty, well that can be accomplished too!!

That list is definitely motivating! Which is good, because tomorrow is my first run with no walking interval! I'm pumped!

hey all you running mavens -- maybe you can help....i am in my third week of running fit's program - very close to couch to 5k..... i am up to run 5/walk1....and i must say i am totally Wiped....not just muscle tired --but dragging, can't resist sleep tired -- no matter what time of day i go.............

my TOM is getting close....could this be related to the extrem tired -- or could my body just need an extra week at the level before i add more run minutes...

i'm at a loss....proud of myself for getting moving & going longer -- but completely discouraged from feeling SO tired afterwards.

I did just get a new-to-me jog stroller today & can't wait to go tomorrow with youngest dd...woohoo, no more pushing the low umbrella stroller!!

Thanks for any help / advice!!

Re: Motivation to Run *must read*

Jenny, chances are it is TOM-related .. I would suggest cutting back a little on your running until TOM is over. Also, are you eating enough protein/fat before you run? What about vitamins? And how well-hydrated are you before you go?
All of those things really affect your stamina ..

If you find that you're still tired after TOM leaves, then try eating a high protein/fat meal 2 hours before you run and make sure you've had enough water too .. minimum 32 oz. See if that helps!

                  You're doing fabulous!

Thank You Betty for the pointers!! I haven't been eating much before i run -- usually a protein snack (HB Egg) and some sips of water before i go out since mainly i've been going early am's.....may need to adjust that & see if it helps.

I am drinking about 3+ liters of water a day -- I carry one with me when i run & sip/finish it with my exercise. I am taking a daily vitamin in addition to 2 atkins supplements.......

and did just realize this a.m. while out for my run -- this is the first week i've also had to push my dd .... that's 40lbs of kid plus stroller in addition to my own bulk....Hmmm....could add to the fatigue

Well -- thank you for the encouragement & suggestions...now, to the shower!!!

You missed the reason that drives me to running -- the alleviation of feelings of guilt that I should be doing more at the moment. The good doesn't drive me, but the avoidance of the bad well I am sucker for. Who needs a carrot when a great big stick will do?
