  • First days attempt at exercise.

This was the first time I've attempted any type of exercise in about.. 15 years. I only finished a 1/2 mile walk. I wanted to do more, but by the end of it I was nearly out of breath and sweating horrendously.

Did anyone start out as horribly out of shape as I am now? And if so, how long did it take and what did you do to work yourself up as you went along?

Would it be best to push myself harder than I did today or should I work it up slowly?

Congratulations!!!!! I can totally relate. I started walking slow and for short distances. After I had been comfortably walking for an hour several times a week I stumbled upon the Couch to 5K learn to run program and haven't looked back. I'm now running 10K easily and train for triathlon which I'm ready to do but have a shoulder/rib injury which means I'll be doing my first tri next spring. It's been exactly one year since I started walking and I was heavier than you! The important thing is to do something! I'm so excited for you. Keep up the good work. Soon you'll be an exercise junkie like the rest of us!

I think 1/2 mile walk is GREAT!!! Work up slowly...this is a WOL so you have plenty of time to get into better shape. There's nothing to rush about. We all start out slow. I couldn't even run three minutes when I first started....but over the years got up to 3 hours. Take your time and drink that water.

I was the same way. I walked short distances for the first week. I increased it by a 1/2 mile each week. By the 4th week I was at a full 3 miles and doing great. I am still to heavy to run, but I am out there walking.

You should definitely work it up slowly, or you could cause yourself a little damage.

Dont panic, everyone starts where you have. That 1/2 mile was a fantastic start. In a month or so you will find it so much easier. In a 2 months you'll be able to do a mile and before you know it you will be running it.

Keep up the very very good work.

Don't feel bad the first time I attempted to exercise after several years. I could only do 10 minutes.

First of all, GREAT JOB GETTING STARTED!! For most people, taking that first STEP is the hardest of all and you've already conquered that!!!

I agree with everyone else who said to take it slow. JUST KEEP DOING IT. You will be amazed at how quickly your body adapts to it and learns to LOVE IT!!
You'll be even more amazed as you see yourself MELT THE POUNDS OFF!! Trust me, it WILL happen!!

Remember, THE JOURNEY OF 1000 MILES BEGINS WITH ONE STEP!! You can do it! I'm so proud of you!!

Nice work ! The first time is the toughest IMO.

Re: First days attempt at exercise.

I was so out of shape. The first day I walked, I went 1/2 way around the block and then came home and sat on the couch. I couldn't get back up. I ended up going to the hospital and had ruptured two disks in my back. Six weeks later, I finally got in to see a neuro surgeon to get cortesone shots. So, yeah, I can understand your problem with starting exercise. My advice is to take it easy, don't push yourself further than you can go. Build up to walking farther over time. This is not a race, it doesn't matter how far others are walking or running, you just have to do what feels right for you. Best wishes.

Re: First days attempt at exercise.

I too am restarting the whole exercise thing. I'm getting light enough to feel well enough to start doing something more than JUST eat right. I started Friday with some bike work and a mile jog and today went and did some more bike for 30 minutes and another mile jog. Other than some sore muscles and joints (bad knees) I'm feeling pretty good. I tried some better more thourough stretches, but I'm pretty much as flexible as a old cast iron stove!
