Re: Remember when you started... exercising

    I does get easier...I promise!

I don't know how many times I wanted to "quit" because I was
SO FRUSTERATED with my exercise....I just knew I was in better
shape than what it seemed at first. I pooped out sooo easily it
    wasn't even funny.

I was only walking and not that fast and furious. It seemed in seconds
I was huffing and weak. Now I walk 3 miles every day at a fast clipping
rate and pump my arms. I get it done easily and even look forward to it!
It took about 3 weeks of walking to get strong and a rhythm and not get
out of breath---but it was worth it!

Since I was only 23 pounds over weight I thought I would be able to
"whip out" a mile easily--NO! Not at first. That is what I was so frusterated
about! I made up my mind to keep it up so I could walk a mile...then 2
and now 3 easily... and now I can and even enjoy it. Sweat still runs
down my body in buckets...but I figure thats good for me and my heart.
I challenge myself now....I need to go for 4 miles.

You can do it...just insist upon yourself that you will do it and it WILL
get easier....Trust me....its so worth it!

Re: Remember when you started... exercising

Is it physically killing you or is it just the 'thought' of exercise that is killing you?

If you are hurting physically (more than just muscle soreness that comes when you first begin an exercise routine), then you are doing TOO MUCH TOO SOON. You need to start out slow and gradually work up. If you are in pain during and after your exercise, then reduce the intensity of what you are doing. Muscle soreness should only last a few days, and once your body adapts to the routine, it should go away totally.

If you're having difficulty getting motivated to exercise, then there is only ONE sure cure: JUST DO IT. As you continue to exercise and your body begins to transform itself and you feel so much better, sleep better, and your mood improves, then all those benefits will keep you motivated from then on!!

Atkins and exercise guarantees lifetime success!! You can lose weight any number of ways, but you'll never keep it off without exercise. NEVER.

Boy Betty hit it the nail on the head there!!! You do have to keep making yourself get up and do it untill it becomes habbit. I still after 7 weeks of this woe and exercising have to make myself get moving a lot of the times. I enjoy it so much afterwards and am very proud of myself for doing it. Besides it speeds up my wt. loss. I had to start out slow and now I push myself to 3 miles a day.

Re: Remember when you started... exercising

I had to start out very slow as I had never done any type of exercise. My starting point was 5 minutes on the treadmill at 1.5 miles per hr. with gradual building over 3 months to about 2 miles at 2.8 mph. Then the treadmill broke. I then started walking and going to Curves which is circuit training. I started out walking 1 mile at the mall (one time around) every other day and after 4 weeks am up to 3 miles at a time. I've gone up .2 miles about every time I walk and I'm not getting sore or getting short of breath. My weight now is 231. When I started it was 261. I took it slow but I had to do it this way but it worked for me.

              It is tough, yes!

Going from walking and running 5 miles an hour to barely making 2 when I started again 160 pounds later!

A day at a time. You'll get there without really realizing it!

Re: Remember when you started... exercising

I can so realt I was a 2MPH 20 min person when I started but now I'm a 60 min over 5.5 MPH walking on the incline, and 7MPH on flats. you will see amazing increases in your speed and stamina if you keep at it and push yourself. I got compliant in fall 2003 and thought I was doing a great job doing HIIT training on the treadmill till the fellow next to me who was a traininer in the AD at the university pointed out for HIIT I should be mouth breathing for the intense part and I was nose breathing the whole time. You too will find yourself getting slack in your efforts as you get better.

                Happy low carbing.

Re: Remember when you started... exercising

I have no idea how you can walk 7mph since I can barely run that fast.

I started out at around 20 mins at 3 mph. It took 6 months before I could run a mile at 5.
After training a lot between 5 and 6 I found that I got more benefits running at around 4-4.5 for a longer time.
                    Today I ran 8 miles in ~1:50.
But once a week I either do a 5K or a tempo run at around 5.8 or so.
The point is that it takes a long, long time to build up endurance and you need to figure out what works for you.

Frankly, I don't think its possible unless you're Kenyan!!
