  • Getting Gassed.

    Hey all,
I have recently switched Martial Arts styles to Krav Maga. Now if you don't know what that is, it's an Israely Self Defense that stresses High Aerobic conditioning, so that you outlast your opponent in a fight. It is a reality offensive martial art, no fancy moves, just devistating ones. It is an hour long class and aerobic till about the last 10-15 minutes, (the pace does slow down as the class goes on) We start out jogging, then push-ups stepping on chairs, more pushups, punching, sit ups over and over. My problem is I run out of gas quite quickly. I hear people saying (at class) you need carbs for energy for this type of activity. Any ideas how to get some quick good carb energy before these classes?

    Thanks

    Re: Getting Gassed.

The people's (saying this) bodies are used to burning carbs for fuel. Yours however should be a fat burning machine (if you are in Induction or early OWL phases), and sending it carbs will only send you out of ketosis and leave you feeling sluggish. It is my opinion after doing long aerobic bike rides (> 2 hours & > 15 mph) and mid range runs that ketosis driven Atkineers as long as well-hydrated do not hit a wall due to lack of carbs. Granted, fat burning is a slower in the beginning phases to convert to ATP energy molecules, but it does create 4x as many. Let your body get used to the switch to the new style, and it will adjust accordingly.

      Re: Getting Gassed.

If you can do long aerobic sessions without eating carbs before or during (like 2+hr slow jog) you will train your body to burn fat.
This will give you a "reserve" to use during hard, anaerobic workouts (yeah they are calling it "aerobics" but it isn't if it's that hard)

You probably need to do some kind of slow aerobic workout 4 other days a week to build this up. (that's assuming 1 class a week...less if you have more classes)

I bet after a couple weeks of this you'll see a huge difference.
