  • Pilates and Yoga??

I want to start one of these.

Can someone tell me their experience with either one?

I want something that will work, no more rough exercising for me.

I have a knee injury and don't want to flare it up.

    Thank you =)

Pilates and Yoga are both fabulous for toning, strengthening, and flexibility. Most of the workouts I do have at least some yoga in them. Anyone who says yoga is sissy stuff hasn't done it! LOL

You're still going to need some cardio though. Yoga and pilates won't provide you with that (unless you're doing power yoga).

Even with a knee injury there are a lot of things you can do that are low-impact. Walk Away The Pounds springs to mind as does Urban Rebounding (mini trampoline workouts).

Oh okay so I'll need some Cardio. I didn't think Pilates or Yoga would cover me in that department. So, its that good at strengthening and toning? Can you tell me more about that?

BTW what are some great cellulite reducing exercises?

Cellulite is just fat. That's it. There's nothing special or different about it, despite what the beauty industry would have us believe. It's just fat that deposits itself close to the surface of the skin and looks icky. Cardio exercise, along with some strength/resistance training and a clean diet is the best shot we've all got.

Pilates is fantastic for core strengthening, in particular. It's tough. People who do pilates consistantly swear it lengthens their muscles. I don't do it often enough to speak to that at all. Yoga requires a lot of core strength and balance as well. Both, like I said, are fantastic for flexibility. Re: Pilates and Yoga??

I'm with Brook on this one. Yoga gets sneered at as being a "non-exercise" exercise. For some reason people think yoga consists of solely of sitting in the lotus position, chanting a mantra and meditating.

Anyhow, if you look at the yoga principles and postures, you'll see that pilates, stretching, some of the exercises done by the NYC Ballet and US Army Special Forces and even some martial arts forms have yoga or yoga-like origins.

It is terrific for strength, flexibility, coordination and balance (which is necessary to be able to do those other exercises like walking, running, swimming, etc.)

I do yoga daily. I go through at least 5 postures and the sun salutations every day. Once a week (usually on Saturday morning), I go through about 10-15 postures and the sun salutations.

I've been doing yoga for about a year now. I have very unstable ankle joints but within 2 weeks of doing yoga (even those 5 postures), my ankles strengthened. Not to mention it's helped my posture out greatly.
