  • Treadmill shortfall?

I decided to try and run on the treadmill at the YMCA today. I did the 5 minute warmup "brisk walk" then the 90 second jog / two minute interval for the next twenty followed up with a 5 minute cool down for thirty minutes in all. I noticed right off the bat that I ran a lot further (usually over 2.5) on the outside trails than the treadmill (just barely 2 miles)??? I'm wondering what went wrong? I seemed to be able to run more "fluidly" on the treadmill and was more comfortable while running. I still sweated like a pig.. so that no indication.

I got done and some little skinny woman quickly grabbed the anti bacterial spray and hosed the machine down before I was even able to get my bearings while giving me a dirty look. I really have never ran on a treadmill and for the first few seconds after hopping off of the thing I felt like I was still moving? So rather than grab the spray and fall on my butt, I decided to stand there still for a little while...

    Re: Treadmill shortfall?

You could have a treadmill that's like mine: it still have an incline even on the lowest setting.
Or maybe your outside running is all downhill?

      Re: Treadmill shortfall?

I have always found it easier to run on the treadmill, but recently ran my quickest 2 miles outdoors. Almost 30 seconds quicker than I do it on a treadmill.

So I suppose it varies on the day and the person.

And I am sorry to hear about that women and the spray.

But it will get easier for you.

Hooo! I just got back from the YMCA today. Fewer people but the treadmill that I used was being used by some young lady... (I'll save that topic for later )
I'm still sticking to the second week of the "couch to 5k" program. I'm feeling a tad better, but still no runner for the most part. The incline felt funny flat so I raised it a level 3 and then set the walking part of the interval to 3.8 and the running portion to 5.5 (I think that's mph?) and I felt really pretty good about the whole thing. I'm still stuck on 260 lbs!

        Thanks for the replies guys
