  • Target Heart Rate Zone

    Hey ya'll,

I just did the THRZ test in the book and mine is 114-132. I am not sure what that means actually. I think it means that at those numbers I am burning fat and calories. Is that right?

I am going to get me one of those heart rate monitors that you wear on your wrist when you exercise and see what my exercise is doing for me. Any tips of a good one to buy?

I *heart* my Polar HR Moniter.

Your Target Heart Rate Zone is the optimum zone for you to get into for aerobic activity. It'll help ensure that you're not working too hard and help you make sure you're working hard enough.

You're 31 years old, right? Using the generic forumla this is what I got for you:

    220-31= 189

    189*.6= 113
    189*.85= 161

So your zone would be 113-161. That's just based on age though.

Mine based on age alone is 112-160, but when my Polar HR calcuated it, it said based on age/weight/height that mine is 121-160.

This is, again, a general guideline. I tend to work out between 140-164ish, with occasional 170ish bursts, and it doesn't wipe me out. I believe my true Maximum Heart Rate *is* higher than 188, but I have zero intention of going through the test to find out. LOL Thanks but no thanks!

Here's the one I have and I love it: http://www.polar-usa.us/polar-f4.html

Almost all of the ones I looked at have a chest strap you wear that transmits to the wrist. They're actually pretty comfortable. I wasn't sure I'd like it, but I don't even notice it's on while I'm working out.

      Brook,

Thanks for the tips. I found this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/search.html...ywords=miopink and it doesn't use the chest strap. What do you think of it?

It looks really nice and is nicely featured, for sure! I wasn't able to pull any reviews on it though, either through Amazon or Epinions.

POLAR IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO. Get the chest strap because they are extremely accurate.

I totally agree with everything Brook said! (AGAIN!)

I agree about getting the chest strap models rather than simply the wrist model. My polar that is linked to my Trimline treadmill is very accurate even after being drenched in sweat, which in should effect help it. I have heard other models (non-Polar) are not as good in those conditions. I highly recommend getting a good Polar as well -- it might be a little more expensive, but if you use it, it'll be worth it in the long run.

              Betty and Kent,

Thanks for the advice. It looks like I need to get a polar then.

                Re: Target Heart Rate Zone

do a search here using Tom as the poster and heart rate monitors as the words cause if the link works Tom got us discounts on buying them

One thing to note is there is absolutely no scientific proof that those zones are correct. a scientist was recording folk working out and noticed that inshape folk were using the same heart rates by age so he devised a formula to predict it and suddnely everybody grab it and used it as gold. your heart may beat faster or slower don't panic. if you can talk not carry on a conversation but talk while working out you are at a good for your current fitness pace. As you get in better shape you will be shocked that the pace that had you at the top of your zone is now out the bottom of your zone and you got to go faster with more incline on your treadmill just to get it back in your range.

                Happy low carbing.
