  • So, I've decided to start running....

I've been thinking about beginning a running program for quite a while and decided that today, I would start one.

I did some research and have decided to use the Couch to 5K program. Only thing is, I'll be using a treadmill rather than actually running outside. There are a few reasons for that...I live way out in the country, it's getting really cold where I live, there's already snow and ice on the ground, it's dark when I leave for work and dark when I get home...to name a few.

Any advice will be gladly accepted since this is my first try at running.

WOOHOO!! Do you realize how excited I get from posts like this?? Makes me wanna go out and run a marathon! NEW RUNNER...YEAH!!!! May you grow to love it as much as I do!!

I think the Couch to 5k program rocks! Its a sure way to break into running without fear of injury or setback. Follow it to the letter!!! Makes no difference if you're on a treadmill or the pavement .. JUST DO IT! Just make sure you have top notch running shoes before you start! That's my biggest piece of advice. If you have a great running shoe in mind and want good prices, check out www.onlineshoes.com. I get mine that way and there's no tax or shipping! I am partial to New Balance, but just find one that you love and that loves you back! Your joints will thank you!

Best of luck, and be sure to join the coolrunning thread that is started weekly in this forum! We love to keep each other inspired and motivated!

WELCOME TO THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF RUNNING!

Betty...thank you for your advice. You are a true inspiration for running and what it can do for you.

Right now, I have Nike Air Shox that I really like...this is the third pair since May. I bought the first pair when I started to do walking for exercise. The salesperson asked if I was going to be running and I said I might, so she recommended these. So far, I like them, but I'll see how they feel with running.

I did the first workout of Couch to 5K...followed it...it was harder than I thought. I will keep going with it though.

I'll start posting in the Cool Running thread also.

        Thanks again!

Re: So, I've decided to start running....

Good for you for starting running. I think that program is also excellent way to start pushing you to do more and more. There is nothing quite like running for working on the mental toughness to keep running one more quarter mile or go around the bend. Doing the program on the treadmill is perhaps more ideal than doing it on a road surface as you know exactly how far you've gone and how much time has ellapsed between run/walk sessions.

Keep up the dedication and by the time spring rolls in and new 5k races start happening, you'll be right there. There is nothing better than doing a 5k race and proving once and for all you are no longer that old self. The experience I had completing my first race (the trail 10k) was nothing short of amazing. It as much as inches lost is an indicator of how far you've come.

Re: So, I've decided to start running....

Hey congratuations for deciding to start! I started the C25K back in late June and now I run about 5-6 miles about four times a week. I would have sworn it would never be possible, but it is! It is a tough program, and it does take some dedication, but the great thing about running is that you're just putting in the miles, waiting to get better. Changes are small at first, but before long you'll be amazed at how much stronger and longer you can run. It was a thrilling experience for me, and still is!

Best of luck to you! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. A lot of us have done that program.

one thing you want to do too besides the shoes is read the runningstride tips like landing on your heels not your toes and rolling up onto the ball of your foot this will save you lots of leg and knee pain. there are other tips there too.

                Have a great time.

oh and if for some reason you discover you can't run then use the C25K to increase your walking times and you will get in great power walking shape ready for a 5K too.

EXACTLY!! That is sage advice!! You should not be able to hear your feet hit the ground as you run if you are doing it correctly.

When I run on the trail, I am amazed at how many people are out there running on the balls of their feet .. I can hear their feet hit the ground and when I see them from the back, their heels never make contact with the pavement. WOW, IS THAT PAIN WAITING TO HAPPEN! If you want to be a long distance runner longterm, you MUST use the "rolling" method!!

Thanks, 2big for the great tip.

Congratulations on your new goal. Is the Couch to 5K on DVD? I've heard it mentioned many times and want to try it but don't know where to start.

Thank you so much for the advice and encouragement! That's the great thing about this board...always someone who is willing to help out!

I'll have to start looking into the 5K runs in our area. The only one I know of in the area is The Steamtown marathon and I don't know if I'll be ready for that by October~~but you never know!

I'll have to start posting in the Coolrunning thread to let you all know how I'm doing.

Again, thank you all so much!
