  • HR Running (Maffetone) Running

Anyone use the Maffetone Running technique? (http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Fo...L/014522.shtml) Basically, your heart rate should never rise above 70% of your maximum heart rate, which would be 131 in my case. You "wog" (walk/jog) for a set distance like 3 miles, and then call it a day. Repeat over and over for weeks, and gradually every other week increase the miles. Supposedly, you will eventually get to a point where you can wog for hours and hours and not be tired and eventually the speed comes up to over low wog speed (12min/mile).

This method seems torturous to me as you intentionally train slow to go long rather than train at an appropriate speed and build your base. Just curious...

Well, no, I'm not following that particular plan, but I do run SLOW and LONG ... I've been able to increase my miles without any difficulty and I do not tire out if I keep a slow enough pace (> 13 min/mile). I jog the whole time but very slowly .. most people could probably walk faster than I jog. That's what I shoot for on Saturdays. Yes, it takes me forever to run 18 miles, (more than 4 hours) but when I'm done, I feel super. At this point in my life, I am more into running slower for longer periods, than winning any speed race.

Yup I'm with you betty I run extremely Slow as well on my long runs that way I can do it LOL. I am not in a race and finishing is the best feeling I would hate to run too fast and die half way. Slow and steady. I do have speed days and slow days I think it has really helped my training having all the variation. This sounds like a running book by Stu Mittleman this guy does super marathons ran 1000 miles in a week He's amazing all using the same principle.
