  • Weightloss/Muscle Gain Formula/Equation.

    *Warning Math Follows

    The following is a formula that Myself as well as some friends derived to help us compare our results for a competetion. Please let me know what you guyz think, as well as feel free to use it in your own contests!!! We are currently in the 3 month contest so I will let you know how it all turns out! Please read down and let me know what you think!!! Also let me know if you think anything is incorrect with the formula! PLEASE!

    *******

    Myself as well as some co-workers have started a weightloss/muscle gain competition.

    There are 10 people involved (out of 15 in the company). The body types range from extremely ectomorphic to extremely endomorphic so we needed some way to fairly judge the weightloss as well as muscle gain.

    Since an ectomorph would not be able to lose or gain near the amount/percentage of an endomorph we tried to normalize the losses/gains. Also this was designed to be a weightloss/muscle gain competetion so we needed to also give "points" for muscle gain.

    For our scale we are using a tanita scale that measures body fat percentage as well as weight.

    We derived the formula....

    Wscore = Your score using this measurements data and the original measurements data.
    Wn = Your wieght this measurement
    BFn = Your body fat this measurement
    Wo = Your weight the first measurement
    BFo = Your body fat the first measurement

    Wscore=3*[(Wn-BFn)/(Wo-BFo)]-[(BFn-BFo)] ^-1

    This takes into account that the average person has a 3:1 Ratio of skeleton/muscle/organs/ect to Fat Ratio. That is why the "muscle gain/loss" term is weighted 3x as much.

    This should give a normalized score that almost anyone can use regardless of how in shape or out of shape that you are.

    well lets see you got to give us your units is the body fat in pounds or % in your formula?

      ....

      Ok sorry about that, there are a few changes I need to make.

      1) The formula is based upon pounds for both weight and body fat %. Therefore you take your percentage and multiply your weight by that to get how much fat is on your body. ex. 100 Lbs. @ 30% Bf => 100 lbs * .30 % body fat = 30 lbs of fat. (0nce again sorry my fault for not listing that)

      So that means the equation is more like this:

      Wscore = Your score using this measurements data and the original measurements data.
      Wn = Your wieght this measurement (Lbs)
      BFn = Your body fat this measurement (Lbs)
      Wo = Your weight the first measurement (Lbs)
      BFo = Your body fat the first measurement (Lbs)

      Also this can be done week to week, because it measures the change in your body, it does not have to be from the first measurement only. All you have to do is substitute in last weeks measurement for Wo and BFo

      2) I even screwed up the equation The correct equation is:

      Wscore=3*[(Wn-BFn)/(Wo-BFo)]+[(BFn/BFo)] ^-1

      Changes being that the two terms are added instead of being subtracted, and the second term is divided not subtracted.

      3) My point in stating that the average person has a 3:1 ratio of "stuff" to fat was supposed to be that this was what we had found on the internet. Not that this was a god proven fact. I am not sure whether this is true or not? (I hope it is )

      4) So an example of two different people:

      [Person #1]
      Day 0 - Weight = 250 lbs
      Body Fat % = 30%

      Day 21 - Weight = 225 lbs
      Body Fat % = 22%

      So this means that the person lost 25 Lbs and 6% of thier fat%.

      SO - BFo = (250 Lbs * .30 ) = 75 Lbs of Fat
      - BFn = (225 Lbs * .22 ) = 49.5 Lbs of Fat

      The equation gives us:

      Wscore=3*[(Wn-BFn)/(Wo-BFo)]+[(BFn/BFo)] ^-1
      Wscore=3*[(225 Lbs - 49.5 Lbs)/( 250 Lbs- 75 Lbs)]+[(49.5 Lbs / 75 Lbs)] ^-1
      Wscore = 4.52372

      Now take person #2
      [Person #2]
      Day 0 - Weight = 160 lbs
      Body Fat % = 12%

      Day 21 - Weight = 157 lbs
      Body Fat % = 9.5%

      So this means that the person lost 3 Lbs and 2.5% of thier fat%.

      SO - BFo = (160 Lbs * .12 ) = 19.2 Lbs of Fat
      - BFn = (157 Lbs * .095 ) = 15 Lbs of Fat

      The equation gives us:

      Wscore=3*[(Wn-BFn)/(Wo-BFo)]+[(BFn/BFo)] ^-1
      Wscore=3*[(157 Lbs - 15 Lbs)/( 160 Lbs- 19.2 Lbs)]+[(15 Lbs / 19.2 Lbs)] ^-1
      Wscore = 4.305

      So i guess what I am trying to show here, is that the score is almost the same for a thin person losing a few pounds, to a heavier person losing a decent amount. Its all about the percent of your total weight as well as the muscle you gain from training.

      Once again sorry about the mistakes before, and if there are any here I will be back to fix them. Let me know what you think please !!!

          Re: Weightloss/Muscle Gain Formula/Equation.

          I just wanted to finnish off this topic with a closing post.

          The score is just a number, it has no meaning, it is just a way to evaluate your progress. Or to compare your progress to anothers.

          I wanted to post this equation/formula for 2 reasons. The first was to get feedback if anyone was interested on the acuracy of it. Secondly and most importantly, I wanted to throw it up here for some one was interested in finding a way to judge a contest that they were going to start that included both muscle gain (from working out, even toning your muscles is considered muscle gain) as well as weight loss.

          If you choose to use it, good luck and feel free to send me a PM with any questions.

          Thanks all!

              hey I think it is great it is the new lean body mass dived by the old lean body mass times 3
              the lastr number I'm not sure about yet I need to do some checking first about your old on bottom and new on top that seems to punish the superheavy weight losing weight more then the light weight folk like 100 pounds beofe loses 25 pounds would be .75 but 10 pounds losing 1 pound would be .1 when the skiny fellow did a 10% change and thefat fellow did a 25% change
