Is it true that if you start exercising after a long period of not doing much of anything, you will gain a little weight? How long does it take to come off?

Re: Is this true?
Yes, but that is good weight because you are building muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat and is smaller in comparison as well. You should not consider that weight as weight you want to lose, but rather keep around. Exercising is 'key' and that muscle aids in the burning of the fat. Don't stress, consider it good progress! The weight will still come off.

Re: Is this true?
The body hyperhydrates the muscle when you begin to exercise. This may last for a few days or a week or so. Instead of weighing, measure inches. You will probably still be losing inches if not pounds.Female, 21, 5'6"
Start: October 24th, 2005, um, restart FOR REALZ 2/24/2007
Total Lost: 60 pounds
237.5/177.5/170/Long Term 120
Then I gained some back, but let's not talk about that, shall we? 194.6/193.2/177.5/120

Re: Is this true?
yep we are genetically programed to save ourselves and when you increase the normal load on your muscles they think you have been attacked cause nobody would ever load them like that for fun right
they will release the extra fluid they are holding for survival purposes as soon as they learn that is a normal load or the amount of fluid exceeds your genetic tolerance for it which ever comes first.
Brook goes up several pounds just changing from one exercise tape style to another cause they use different styles of loading the muscles. Just think you are burning off fat and you are going to get an extra large whooshie cause you will be shedding muscle fluids weight too soon.by the book atkinseer

Re: Is this true?
What 2big and everyone else says is true.
Is your goal weight loss or fat loss? - Because sometimes the two are mutually exclusive
The "weight gain" is transient. Hang in there and your body will adjust and figure out that these new stresses are going to be part of what it has to deal with. It'll become the norm and your body won't hold on to the water for much longer
Keep on keepin' on!

Re: Is this true?
Hey!
OMG!!!! Am I glad I read this! I was beginning to lose my mind! (Not that difficult a trick let me asure you
)
As you guys know I am gradually increasing my exercise time and type, and for the last 6 weeks, even though I was eating right, I was still piling on the weight
I knew some of it was fluid etension cause my wedding ring was very snug, and some of it was new muscle cause both of my legs are the same size again (It was freaking amazing as to how fast the operative side atrophied!!!!!) but the rest?????????????
I was at my wit's end trying to figure out what was happening.
Mystery solved.....THANKS!
(Start -2/2) (Ramp -13/12) (Burn -13/22) (Jog - 110K) (147-4=143)
Mini goal - look smashing in a swimsuit by April 1.

Heh.Originally posted by ttdriverHey, I'd trade losing a few pounds of FLAB for gaining a few MUSCULAR ones.
Hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I think losing weight without exercise is for weenies.
