  • Heart Rate questions

Can some people post their pulse rates at rest and duirng exercise? I bought a pedometer with a pulse device on it. Now I know that when I was slim before I always had a low heart rate (Mum does too), often used to be 30-35 on rising. At the moment, when I wake up in the mornign, before I get up, it is 40-46. When exercising, no matter how hard I go at it, I cannot get it over 110. This is during treadmill work that makes me sweat and leaves me definitely unable to carry on a conversation.
I'd be interested in seeing how other people's pulse rates compare. (Yes,I know we are all different, but it may be helpful)

    Re: Heart Rate questions

I'm not sure of the accuracy of the pedometer pulse, but my Polar heart rate monitor is VERY accurate. I wear it on Saturdays during my long runs in order to make sure I am in my peak fat burning zone.

My resting heart rate is about 60, give or take. My maximum is 180, and I try to make sure I am running those long runs (in excess of 4 hours) at about 160. That allows me to burn roughly 1600 calories during a sustained run.

Before I lost the weight and began exercising, my resting heart rate was closer to 80, but it drops dramatically as your cardiovascular conditioning level improves. Which is a very good thing!!!

Do you take any kind of medications to slow your heart rate? It seems unusually low to me, but hey, as long as it ticks, right?

what does your doc say about your low heart rate and your targets?

When I do my cardio my target is 145 and i stay there.
my resting is 61 in the AM it used to be 74.
When I do HIIT I go for 185 and 110 in the intervals.

        Re: Heart Rate questions

Doc says it is obviously normal for Mum and I. She has a mitral valve problem but mine is fine. He was very intrested and did all sorts of tests on us (this was when we both still lived down south) and said MUm's low heart rate isn't caused by her valve problem, it is obviously just us. She thinks her father had it too but is not sure. The resting heart rate has dropped as I lose more weight, but seems to be stabilised at the moment.
I don't have any irregular beat problems or anything like that.
Betty, how much was the polar monitor, as you say, the pulse thing on the pedometer is probably nowhere near as accurate.

So since you have such a low resting does he say it is okay ofr you to base your target heart rate on the 220 formula?

            Re: Heart Rate questions

I have a low resting heart rate as well...and my Dr. was ok with it. Mine is usually in the 40's, sometimes the 50's. I usually keep it between 120 - 140 when running.

I have a friend who's a nurse that says a low resting heart rate is good?

I have a polar HR monitor as well. Odille, I just bought the basic one..no bells or whistles, just HR only and I got it for about $50 cdn..
