  • Advice for a beginner???

    Hi!

I'm really new to exercise and I have the tendency to start something really passionately, work out too hard, and then burnout, and I don't want to do that this time. I'm sticking to this for life, so I'd like some advice on getting started. I want to start slow and build slowly, but I'm not sure what a good goal would be. I'm probably just going to start with walking, but I don't know how long or how far or how fast or any of that stuff. I'm not in good shape at all, but I really want to get there. Can anyone help me??

The best advice I can give is just do what you can. You will be amazed how quickly you improve. And the improvements will be so great that it will keep you going.

To give you an example, 2 years ago I joined a gym. I was a fat lad, and just about struggled to run 1/2 a mile. Over time its got steadily better and better. last weekend I ran 10 miles!

Thats all in the space of 2 years. If you start walking today, your distances and speeds will improve and improve.

    HTH a little?

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

      Soonerjules,

I hate exercise too, but I have found that the "walk away the pounds" tapes from Leslie Sansone are terrific because you can buy the 1, 2, 3, or 4 mile tape and work through them as you move up in your exercise activities. Hope that helps!

Well, from my own experiece...I was very active up until I was about 23 years old and gained 100 lbs! Yikes, I know. So a year ago my new year's resolution was to walk for 10 min a day, every day. WEll, that didn't happen, but that prompted me to walk 3-4 miles 3-5 times a week. Some weeks I did really good and some weeks not so good. But I stayed consistant and walked for about 6 months, dropped about 25 lbs then started slowly incorporating jogging into my routine. A week ago Sunday, I completed my first half-marathon!

I think the key is, find something you like, do it consistantly, then make sure you mix up your work-out, walking, jogging, swimming, tennis, WHATEVER it is that you like to do and do it 3-5 times a week.

Also, having a goal (the half marathon) really helped motivate me.

Good luck! Your butt will thank you ; )

Wow. You all are so inspirational. I still have doubts about myself and working out, but I'm sure going to put some real effort into it. I'm moving to another state at the end of this month, so I'm going to wait to start until I'm in my new apartment. The complex even has a workout room!! But I think I will probably start out walking. I'm still getting the hang of the WOE, so I'm going to take it slow and do things one thing at a time.
