  • Question for Barbde - What do you think of Tony Horton?

Barb (and anyone else familiar with P90 and Tony),

Rather than cluttering up the vidiots thread, I thought I'd start a new one.

You've used P90 in the past, right? How do you think it compares to Debbie? I really hate annoying instructors, and I've heard that Tony can be . . . um . . . a little hard to take.

I think it's time for me to mix it up a bit after 12 weeks of Debbie, so I'm thinking of trying P90 or even parts of P90x after a TJ rotation.

    Thanks!
    Anna

Re: Question for Barbde - What do you think of Tony Horton?

Tony Horton is a clown and on the P90 tapes, I do get annoyed with his "booms" and "bangs." After doing Slim & 6 and Slim Series, you'll find his P90 sweat tapes to be easy & they're about 30 minutes long. I like doing them for the variety because he does do different moves than Debbie. I went ahead and bought his P90 master series because I'm hoping that it'll help ease me into his P90X series (HARD!!!).

With regular Power 90, you get sweat 1/2, sculpt 1/2, sweat 3/4, and sculpt 3/4. There's also the ab ripper 100 & 200 that comes on right after the aerobics section. For me to get a good aerobics workout, I have to really follow through with the moves and get my whole body into it....not just move my arms. I guess that would make sense with any workout. The part of the sweat routine that I find really annoying is doing the "x-work" section, but basically, I just move my feet really fast. I do enjoy the weight lifting section.

In his Power Half-hour series, he's not as goofy as the P90 tapes, but he's definately not mr. serious. However, PHH is a great workout! I get sore from just his 30 minutes of pain. There are a couple of different workouts to choose from: arms, thigh trimmer, bun burner (something like that), abs (mostly an aerobics tape that blasts your abs: think Ab Jam without the dance steps), stretch, and maybe one more. In the thigh and buns workouts, you'll recognize some of the moves from Debbie's floor exercises, but it's done standing up with a chair. It's nice knowing a different way of working out those muscles. Also, he doesn't make you stay on one leg forever. He'll switch back and forth, which is nice in my opinion.

In the P90X series, he's completely serious....no goofing around. 12 different DVDs focusing on different parts of your body. My hubby said it's the best investment he's ever made in workout tapes, but he thinks that Debbie Siebers is the one that really slimmed him down & got him ready for P90X. I can only do some of the tapes, the others are way too advanced for me at the moment. Beach body put a lot of thought and effort into designing P90X series. I'm looking forward to being able to do all of those workouts.

Oh, and in the Power 90 Master Series, they have sweat 5/6, sculpt 5/6, another aerobics tape (haven't watched it yet), a plyometrics tape, and I believe an abs tape. I can't really give an opinion on this workout series yet as I haven't used them. I'm giving myself about another month of Debbie and Power 90 before I venture forward.

    Hope this helps you out.

Ah good, Biogeek answered that question way better than I could have. I have done a COUPLE of Tony's workouts. Mainly the Power 1/2 Hour. Tony annoys me to no end though, so I had a really hard time sticking with him. Now you have me thinking. Perhaps I'll give him another try after this challenge is done.
        Thanks for taking that Biogeek!!

It's the annoyingness that has me concerned. I really hate annoying workout personalities and somehow it's usually worse with the guys. If he's more serious in P90x, I may go that route and just skip the parts I can't do. I'm hoping to turn DH into a vidiot, and he may prefer P90x to Debbie.

I think Tony Horton prefers to be the "goofball" type; however, there's none of that to my recollection in P90X. I'll have to ask DH about it as he uses it more than I do. I have to warn you though, that P90X is a lot more expensive than all the other BeachBody products, so buy it when it's on sale or you have a good coupon!

You'll want to get a good mat for the plyometrics....I bought a "manduku" (I think that's how it's spelled) mat. It's a thick mat that rolls up & costs around $80. It's also good for yoga. Speaking of which, his yoga workout is tough! You WILL sweat through it!! It's not your usually sissy yoga workout!

If you're up for it, you'll also want to get a chin up/pull up bar for parts of the upper body workouts.

One of the very first workouts you'll do is a fit test. It takes about 45 minutes or so...maybe an hour. It's hard! But...it's helpful to see how you've progressed over time. You'll want a buddy or a tripod handy b/c for part of the fit test, it should be video taped.

The workout DVDs don't come in the usual DVD cases. All the DVDs are in one of those portable DVD/CD cases that zip shut.

If you want, I can take some pictures of what you get & post 'em.

Thanks, Biogeek. I already know what the set looks like, though, so it's not necessary. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for a good deal, and then I may jump.
