  • carbohydrate-electrolyte drink??

'For session of cardiovascular training longer than 40 minutes, you need to provide fuel as well as fluid and drinking a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution is the easiest way to do this.'

So thats the easiest way... but whats the atkins way?

IMHO just keep yourself hydrated and drink loads of water whilst working out.

Power Aid Options. Propel. Sarah puts a tiny pinch of sea salt in her water.-- Hope that helps.--When you arrive at the Nuts rung you can use these, be aware of triggers and the fact that they may make you have to exercise more later;>)

You are burning fat for fuel. If you are keeping your fat intake high, you will have plenty of energy for longer workouts. I agree; stay hydrated, but not OVERHYDRATED .. which could have serious side effects.

since you are worried about electrolytes learn what foods to eat as part of your Atkins to supply the ones you need www.fitday.com will in the reports section tell you what vits and minerals you are low on and then you can supplement accordingly. Ask your doc about a salt sub or OTC potassium supplemtns since some need them and some don't.

How do you know if you're OVERhydrated? Especially if you're not used to drinking a lot of water?

This looks like to be quite a common problem in the people who are into exercising and often end up in a fix to choose from the right way to keep oneself hydrated, incidentally in my quest to learn about this I got myself this http://www.imsickofbeingfat.com/foru...=sports+drinks now after reading it does it give us a better idea about the type of drinks we should choose from? The choice rests on individual preference I guess.

As a kind of aside, sports drinks are HUGE in the marketing industry right now. Big money being made off of them which at least for me, has me leary. I eat well and drink water and that works for me. (my long runs are up to 11 miles now)

Sports drinks are primarily sugar .. unless you find the SF ones like SOBE NOFEAR .. which I love, by the way ..

I definitely need more than water for my running, especially during the summer months here in Florida .. its extremely hot and humid and even the best conditioned of runners suffer without electrolyte replacement.

                      Betty,

Have you tried the Sugar Free Sobe Adrenaline Rush drink? I looked at the ingredients for this one and the No Fear drink on their website. Looks like they both have a lot of caffeine. On the other hand, there are a lot of vitamins too.
I got this off their website, under Health Facts, which was a little disappointing:

if you know the history of the drinks the first gatoraides were mostly salts and even had sugar free version back in the 70s then they discovered salt wasn't what jocks really needed cause it could be handled better at meal times and they added carbs to the drinks and it became mostly a carbohydrate drink in the 80s and still is today.
But since we are fat fueled we don't need the heavy carbs and that will actually hinder us all you need to do is figure out what watersoluble vits and minerals you need to replace that you are using up and sweating out and you can make your own.

                        Happy low carbing
