  • The Casualities Of War

Well, a week after the marathon and the body is feeling strong again .. only exception is the big toe of my left foot which has recurring fluid under the nail .. I've poked pin holes in it several times and the fluid GUSHES out each time .. today, its hurting a little less, but its STILL THERE ..

Other than that? The old gray mare has recovered nicely!

    Re: The Casualities Of War

I admire you so much for completing a marathon... When I have a long roadmarch (20k or more) I always get fluid under my pinky toes. Being a medic, I would just go to the clinic and have them pull it, since my pinky toe nails are really small anyway. For a big toe, I stuck to the hot pin method also, but watch out for any dirt and various oogies getting in there, you can get a nasty infection. i don't recommend pulling a big toe nail, it looks weird lol and it makes the skin underneath supersensitive. A few things you can do to alleviate it are warmth, i.e. warm compress, also keeping it out of shoes as much as possible to keep pressure off it. Definitely anti-bacterial ointment. If my advice is unsolicited, I'm a busybody and overly-helpful, but I always feel for anyone with toe issues.

      THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!

Any person who has experienced fluid under a nail understands the PAIN and PRESSURE!! Its awful!

I am definitely staying OUT of shoes for the time being; and will use your suggestion of a warm compress!!

      THANKS AGAIN!

My friend had a similar problem with her toe (not from anything noble like running a marathon or anything!). She did three things that said helped: took extra vitamin A, drank extra water, and kept it in the sun. It cleared the problem up pretty quick.

Good luck with that, though, it sounds awful!

Kept it in the sun? Wow, that's interesting. I guess it makes sense though!! Thanks, I definitely have plenty of sun here in Florida! I appreciate it!

Well, the toe is a wee bit better ..

I soaked it for 30 minutes in the hot tub yesterday and then put Neosporin with pain relief ALL AROUND THE NAIL .. bandaged it .. and it seems that the pain has really decreased ..

So I'm gonna push it this afternoon and run 6+ miles and see if it drops off!

Try soaking it in Epsom salt - that always worked for me... Sounds like you have gooten a lot of good advie from the others. Happy running and hopefully the toe doesn't cause you too much discomfort today during your run!
