  • What/who Inspired You To Start Running?

I thought it would be interesting to find out what got you RUNNING?

For me, it was a sort of "tongue-in-cheek" dare to myself .. I was never an athlete, or anything remotely close to a runner. I started walking daily back in 2002 and then worked up to speed walking. From there, just a "wild hair" idea to give jogging a try ..

THE REST, AS THEY SAY, IS HISTORY........

    What about you?

Good question... I don't have a good answer though. I have run sort of on and off for several years, never more than a miles or two though. I'd go through spurts where I'd run consistently for a month or two, but it never stuck.

In December, my then-boyfriend said why bother for a mile or two, you're barely getting warmed up by then. So we made a bet to see who could run more miles in a week... he won, but it was fun. Then in early February a friend told me I should run a 10K with her at the end of the month... so I started getting serious! I feel like really I've just started running, but this is the first time I've really enjoyed it, and I know it's gonna "stick" this time!

I always Hated running and so when I started it was like I never liked it thought I would give it a go and I found I really loved the workout it gives me. Betty you helped me to stay the course through your help I have become what I am today. Of course I am extremely stubborn and if I do something I always want to excell and do it to the best of my abilities.

Well...joining the Air Force sort of got me going After that...I thought it would be soooo cool to do a triathlon. For whatever reason...I just admired the triathletes so much and I wanted to be able to call myself one. So I started running. There's something about running over 40 minutes that feels soooo good. I dunno how to say it. For me...getting up to that point is such a chore....then once I hit that 40 minute mark....it's a challenge and I push myself more and more. I actually like biking more, but I'm looking forward to putting a marathon on my resume.

Strangely enough, I started because I found I could. I was never a runner, even when I was a really really thin teenager. Yet now I love it.

            bizarre really.

Re: What/who Inspired You To Start Running?

I recently started running again because I know from past experience nothing helps the pounds shift quicker than running.

Not a very noble reason I know, but there it is.

OH Thank you SOmbersusie, I just do the best I can do and that's all anyone can ask, way to go on the running I started at 255 pounds so I know what it's like to run heavier there is a lot of extra demand on the Body but, it sure does get easier as the pounds fly off. GREAT JOB!!!

Re: What/who Inspired You To Start Running?

It was this board that got me started. Like a lot of you guys, I never ever EVER ran before. I was always kinda athletic, although always overweight and was good at playing sports like softball, volleyball and badminton but forget anything with track events. As I became more obese even those other sports suffered and I basically became a couch potato. One night heading up to bed, I was actually winded going up a flight of stairs. I thought that was just insane and had to do something. I started this woe, then found this board and was inspired to commit to exercise...anything. At that time it was walking. Then someone made a post about the Couch to 5k program so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm one of those people that likes to have a program to follow so I thought what the heck. I'll just take it slow. I figured that I would spend three weeks for every level instead of one. I was about 250 pounds at the time too! Our bodies are amazing things. I was able to follow the program weekly. That was just so amazing to me. Even with my asthma! Then I found a 10K training program and moved to that. Then a triathlon training program. And a marathon program! Honestly, right now it's all you guys that keep me inspired. (Mind you, I'm having a heck of a time getting over this pneumonia which has kept me from doing anything for six weeks now *pouts* I might have to postpone my May half marathon to the fall. I'm still registered for my June triathlon. We'll see). I have to tell you too, I don't love running. I don't think I ever will. I never get the so-called 'runner's high'. I LOVE how I feel when I've completed my run. I hate it while I'm doing it. Weird, eh? I do know that I'll never stop. Thanks all you guys here at the exercise forum. Especially you, Betty!

Yanno, this is pretty common .. I find that, for alot of people, running is something you either LOVE or LOATHE. Kinda like cats!! My BRAIN loves to run, my body puts up a fight ... but I AIN'T GONNA QUIT! Diana, I know you won't either!

That 88lb medal in the post above me is inspiration enough to start running farther. I want some bling bling like that.
