  • How Do You Prefer to Run??

Some folk run on treadmills, some run on the track, some on the pavement .. which do you prefer?

I love running outside .. I think its more challenging for me than a treadmill .. I never seem to get the same workout on a machine that's propelling me forward as I do when I'm outdoors, having to use my own body to thrust forward with each step. Not to mention the other challenges: wind, humidity, heat ...

Sure wish concrete was softer, though!!

I find the treadmill easier and for that reason I voted for that. But I am not that fussy, I'll run almost anywhere.

Betty, I did 10k on the TM last night in 60:19 (very happy with that time).

I was happy with it, especially as I had only done the 5 k two days before. I went really light headed when I finished last night, which is obviously a bad thing, but a bottle of water and a sit down sorted that out.

Good luck with your run this weekend, Betty. Out of interest, how long does it take you on average to run 5k?

Its been forever since I've done a 5k .. but I think my fastest was around 33 minutes. I didn't sign up for any this spring since I've been focusing on the longer distances.....10k and up.

I much prefer road work. I never was comfortable on a treadmill. Plus the one we have I'm over the weight limit and the belt skips ever once in a while if I misstep. So for me road work is the best. Plus I find it more interesting to see the landscape. Plus there is nothing like a REAL early morning run where the only sound is the birds and your running shoes slapping the pavement, no treadmill motor sound.

Re: How Do You Prefer to Run??

I voted 'on the pavement' but I actually prefer to run outside on trails. I'm lucky to live in a rural area with lots of forested and field trails. One thing I really don't like about the winter is that I have to run on a treadmill because of my asthma. I find it extremely boring even if I'm watching a movie or something. It's certainly easier because I live in a very hilly area, but man, it's boring. Especially my long runs which are 11 miles at this point. Couple more months I'll be back outside. Yay!!!! Well, assuming I can get over this blasted pneumonia.

I agree; the dreadmill bores the life out of me. The only time I use one is when running outdoors is impossible (like on a cruise ship!) I run outdoors no matter what ... rain, wind, hurricane, 90 degrees, 100% humidity .. makes no difference to me!!

Re: How Do You Prefer to Run??

I picked "on the pavement". My runs outside consist of both the pavement and dirt roads. It makes you work so much harder and you get to have a change of scenery. When I run on the treadmill I find myself constant;y checking the amount of time I have been running or how far i have run. It doesn't make the run very enjoyable. Bring on the warm and breezy weather!
