  • Treadmill....

When I run on my treadmill I usually hold onto this bar that is infront of me. Is that bad, like am I still getting enough out of my workout even if I am holding on some of the time?

Its advised that you dont hold on to the bar whilst running. I am not 100% why, I just know that you shouldnt. I think its for safety purposes. Its ok to hold on whilst walking, but not whilst running.

Rich is right. Plus, holding the bar will slow you down. You need your arms free when you are running to support and thrust you forward.

The trainer at the gym told me that by holding on to the bar you are only burning 1/2 the amount of calories than you would be if you were swinging your arms while walking.

You getting more out of it than lounging on the couch. I usually have to hold on also if I am going too fast. Running is definitely out of the question (for me). But I figure if I am holding on is still better than sitting on my butt. EFX is my choice of workout.

But its known to be dangerous to hold on whilst running.

No probs. I can appreciate that. Sometimes speed reading isnt that easy.

I am as guilty as you sometimes.

strange, in the book I got with my treadmill it said to hold on while running. I am going to start putting my arms to my side. Thanks everyone!

                    Re: Treadmill....

well after i read this post i went on the treadmill done 2 miles at 6mph non stop and i didnt use the handlebars for the first time..and i gotta say it is much more tiring and u can really feel it in your shoulders afterwards so it is DEFINATELY BETTER not using the bars and just moving your arms while running

                      Re: Treadmill....

they tell you to hold on cause they don't want you to sue them if you fall off cause you couldn't keep up. The proform treadmills at my gym give a warning to anybody holding on to the heartrate monitor bar going faster then 5.5 MPH that is is dangerous hold on while running.

I know my heart rate is 4-6 beats perminute faster not holding on then holding on.

once you get used to the tread action you can let go and walk or run with your normal stride and get a great workout. just hang on if you raise or lower the incline or make a big change in speed as this will effect your balance when the treadmill changes.
