Hi all. I entered a 5 mile road race today, 500 entries and a great course. I finished in a time of 45:14 which I was dead happy with. Just over 9 minute miles.
I found that for the last 4 miles of the race, there was a runner who was running at much the same pace as me. I would overtake her and then she would over take me and then we would overtake each other and so on. In the end, it just happened that we ran together as we were obviously well matched for pace.
We didnt talk. and she had head phones in and was listening to music so we couldnt talk. At one stage I started to run a little freely and turned to her and clapped her along and mouthed "come on". She smiled and stepped her pace up a bit. We continued running on.
With just 400 metres or so to go, I started to sprint and she very kindly said that I should go for it. So I did.
At the end of the race just after picking up my medal and having a drink of water, she came up to me and thanked me. That was so nice of her. We didnt know each other at all. I said to her that she helped me aswell, as there were times where I felt as if I was struggling, but I just kept going as she was also (does that bit actually make anysense? Its late here) LOL
Anyway, if you can find someone in a race that is roughly your pace, its a great idea to motivate eachother.
Thanks for reading and I hope it inspires or helps others in future races.
