  • Yardwork!

I think I got a good amount of exercise today.

I dug up a leaking drip irrigation pipe in our front lawn. It has a hole in it & I have to now go to Lowe's or Home Depot to see if it can be repaired. Then I took a saw to our mesquite tree. The Monsoon storms have tilted it to one side & it's too big to try to pull back up with stakes. So I trimmed away some of the bigger branches on the leaning side to lighten it up. Got a lot of wood for our firepit now so that's good. Then I trimmed away all of the hanging branches to raise the canopy of the tree up so now I can walk underneath it & not have to bend over or hit my head on branches. Then I took all the trimmed branches & broke them down to put in the trash bin. My hands hurt & have a couple blisters on them but it's nice to have that tree done! :joy

I know I get a GREAT work out from mowing our lawn! I work up more of a sweat mowing than doing anything else!!

The yard work may work up a sweat, but in general yardwork should be considered to be recreation and NOT a workout. If your goal is fat loss, then you need to focus on sustained constant cardio in your target heart range.

Perhaps you can do that with pushing a lawnmower in a HUGE lawn, but it is a common mistake to think that doing something that causes a sweat (even sports like basketball) is a great way to lose fat.

For fat loss, it is much better to bike or jog for 30-45 minutes straight in your target heart range than to do yard work (or yes, even play basketball because bball has too many stops and goes to keep your heartreat sustained where it needs to be for optimal fat loss).

Don't get me wrong - ANY exercise is better than non, but don't fool yourself into thinking yardwork counts as cardio.

keep getting all the free exercise you can and allow it to be supplemental to your regular scheduled cardio and resistance programs.
