I posted this in Heidi's "health" post about feet, but thought it was worth repeating here in the exercise forum.
LISTEN UP:
My feet are my tires .. I love to run therefore I take GREAT CARE of my feet by wearing the BEST SHOES I can buy. Money doesn't dictate the shoes I buy; its comfort and cushioning and I cannot and will not put a price tag on that.
Taking up running later in life taught me the importance of wearing the right shoes, and most importantly, REPLACING THEM AT THE RIGHT TIME. For me, that's every 300 miles, no exceptions. Now, some people shrug at the thought of spending BUCKS like that every 90 days. But I don't. Why? Because for the past (nearly) 3 years that I've been running, I haven't had one episode of pain in my feet, ankles, shins or hips. The only time I had knee pain was when I first started out and thought I could run in a pair of worn out Reeboks. Lesson learned from that bout with runners knee. I trashed those shoes immediatley afterwards and have had NO KNEE PAIN ever since! Now, considering I've been running 35-40 miles every week for the past year .. including a half-marathon and a full marathon in the past 4 months, what does that tell you about the importance of protecting your feet with the correct shoes and TOSSING them when they've reached the end of their cushy life?
50 years old, an avid runner who has zero pain .. all due to the right shoes at the right time.
Yes, my tootsies are worth every cent.
