Does anyone swim and could tell me the calories that you can burn. I have been taking the steps at my high rise...there are 88. And some friends of mine just opened their pool and said I can come anytime to swim. I also know there are exercises you can do with milk jugs, anyone know any?

    Re: Swimming

Besides walking, swimming was the one exercise that I attribute to my weight loss and toning of my body. I used water 'noodles'. I'd stradle them and do the 'bicycle' around the pool for about 50 laps. I'd also hold the 'noodle' over my head with my arms and swim using only my legs to push me around the pool. I'd then put the noodle under my armpits and use my arms and legs to swim. The noodle created friction and made my arms work harder to swim.

Another thing I did in the pool was fast laps. I'd do as many laps as fast as I could every day. I worked up to about 30 laps - which left me exhausted. Walking in the shallow water also is good for your legs. 2,000 steps is supposed to be 1 mile. I'd try to walk at least 2,000 steps back and forth.

I took water areobics once and we used empty milk jugs trying to hold them down under the water and swim. It was the same principal as the noodles, as it caused your body to work harder to go and thus burning more calories. I don't know the exact amount of calories you'll burn, but I do know that swimming is great for toning and exercising.

        Re: Swimming

I got mine at walmart for .99 each. They are in with the floaties and kickboards and other swim gear. They are long pieces of foam in various colors. Some are slim and others are thick. I had the slim ones. They look just like a noodle and I totally recommend them for working out in the pool. The kids love to play with them too.

            Re: Swimming

I swim a lot during the summer since we have a pool in the backyard. I love it and it's excellent exercise. You'll burn different amounts of calories depending on the level of exertion. What I like the best about swimming is that you don't notice the sweat.

              Re: Swimming

We have a pool at the high rise we live in , but for now I do not think I should expose myself in a bathing suit to others......lol and there are usually many kids in it. Our friends have a pool and they don't care if we come over at any time. they only live about 20 minutes from me. I just called my husband and told him when I get off work (4;00) that we are going over there. Can't wait to get a good long hard swim in. I won't do what i did last night though............and you all can get a laugh out of this , I did...

We got home and I told my husband I am going to take the steps.........to the 6th floor there are 88.....so i was going to run up them to try to beat him.....lol, I got to the 4th floor and was pooped!!! I did make it to the 6th floor but it was hard. Of course he beat me and had the door unlocked, and thank God our door id right by the steps, he opened the step door and I had about 8 more to go, was hanging on the railing to finish going up and made it in the door and fell on the couch...........this done me in for the night!!!!!lol
I should of not tried to be a smart butt and try to think I could beat him, and should of had enough sense to realize it had been awhile since I done ANY exercise!!!
So tonight swimming will be exercise.......with SINCE!!!

                Re: Swimming

I looked up one of those general, not very accurate calorie charts and for 200 pounds it says 276 calories for 30 minutes of moderate swimming. Of course it doesn't specify male or female, and that's if you swam for 30 minutes straight. Go for it and push yourself and you'll see results, regardless of the number of calories you burn

Hi! The swimming sounds like great exercise but definitely keep up with using the stairs up to your place, before you know it you will be trotting up them like they are nothing.

                        Re: Swimming

When I went to my friends Saturday, I did not stop at wal mart. But when I got there and went to the pool, there was 2 noodles!!! And yes I found that there are alot of exercise you can do with those things!! I used the pool and noodles for 2 hours, exercising the entire time. Then we went back on Sunday and I did another 3 hours. GOT some sun too!! Which I needed. After returning home, I was a little sore. But we have a massager and my husband massaged me for about an hour. My neck is a little sore, but other than that I feel great. My friends said I can use the pool anytime. It is a very nice pool.

Thank you for suggesting the noodles!!!
