I started swimming at our local community pool last week. It was hard walking out there in my bathing suit! Anyway, I'm swimming a variety of strokes - side, front crawl, back crawl & back stroke.

I found out that 1 lap (up and back) is 50 meters.

The first day I swam: 6 laps (in 30 min)
Second day: 8 laps (in 30 minutes)
Third day: 10 laps (in 30 minutes) then treaded water for an additional 5 minutes.

Along with walking our dogs 3.3 miles (in 65 minutes) 3 times a week.

What kind of calories am I burning here? Anyone?

And, while this may be a stupid question, I'm going to ask anyway. How am I going to lose weight when all this added exercising is making me HUNGRY! Man, I'm eating like it's going out of style. I mean, I'm starving!

I eat three, well rounded squares a day, plus probably 3 more little snacks thoughout a typical day - so my blood sugar should be good, but I'm starting to out eat my husband. And that scares me! Could the swimming be to blame?

Hey, I just saw this post for the first time. I LOVE to swim and wish there was a pool near enough for me to swim.

      Re: Swim fan

      Hi Dawn,
I just saw your posting while searching for "swimming"... If you feel like eating the first thing that crosses you especially after swimming.. then I was the same way prior starting Atkins..
      .
I was a competitive swimmer in my teen years. About 6 months ago I started swimming again at the local YMCA masters team. Problem is I have always been a good swimmer even when fat.. so I can't allow people to out swim me.. because of these I found out I was over exercising and therefore when I got home after swimming workout I would start eating like crazy.. yea carbs mostly to begin with.. :-/

So about 2 month ago I found this site and also set up my mind to do Atkins.. The first 2-3 days I had the usual carb withdrawal symptoms everyone mention here.. but afterwards I experienced a significant increase in energy.. in the sense that I did not get tired so quick during workouts plus I also noticed no more monster hungers.
      .
Actually I quit swimming with the masters team since starting Atkins because they workarout in the afternoon and by then the water temp is way too HOT for me to be comfortable swimming/working out. Instead, I swim first thing Saturday morning after waking up on an EMPTY stomach!! I swim 1 1/2 times what I used to swim with the master's team in less time... best of all I do not get crazy hungry for another good hour or so after my swimming workout.. This gives me time to properly cook a bountyful Atkins breakfast.. life is good! I have never experienced anything like this before Atkins.. So I guess you may need to double check that your carbs are under control to make sure you are in induction..
      .
      Regarding your other questions..
      www.fitday.com shows for
Swimming laps, freestyle, fast, vigorous effort 30 minutes 455 calories burned.
I guess vigorous effort is hard to track unless you have a heart rate monitor.
      .
The more efficient you get with your swimming stroke the fastest you'll go. Also, you will need to work harder/swim more. You problably know this already because you are swimming more laps in same time.
      .
I recommend you join some swimming classes/club if available in your area to work on your stroke/technique. Then swim on!
      .
Also, check again with your pool people about yardage/meters.. Most swimming pools in USA are 25 yards (like YMCAs). A lap I guess it is 50 yards. My last Sat. workarout was 40 laps in about 30 minutes. My "old" workarout with the Y masters was close to 2400 yards (48 laps) and 1 hour.
      .
Have fun enjoy the water and hopefully we can recruit more water souls ;-)

        Re: Swim fan

Try eating 6 smaller meals a day instead of your usual 3. Make sure you're drinking lots of water and continue on with the exercise. As you become accustomed to the program, your appetite usually gets smaller. I found that every time I started a weight loss program in the past, my mind convinced my body that I was starving. The good thing about Atkins is that you can eat till you are satisfied.

I attribute swimming to really jump starting my weight loss in the beginning. My arms tightened up and my thighs due to swimming every day. Best wishes, keep us posted on your progress....we are all here for you!
