  • Which HRM

I am hoping to buy a heart rate monitor. I am looking for one thats not too expensive. Maybe $100 maximum (£50).

The only real specification I am looking for is that it must be able to tell me how far I have run aswell as what my heart rate is.

Does anyone know if I will be able to buy one like that for the money I am looking to spend?

Browse at www.polarusa.com ... I can't think of a better HRM than Polar. I've logged nearly 160,000 calories on mine and its been stellar. I have the M61.

Betty, does it also log distance covered as well?

Mine does not .. and, truthfully, I'm not sure how accurate that feature would be since distance varies based on stride length, etc. For that reason, I've never put much faith in pedometers either. IMO, the best way to gauge distance is to drive the route and measure it on the odometer .. or, in my case, have your spouse ride behind you on a bicycle with an odometer!

I agree on the Polar HRT monitors they are very affordable (Depending on how many features you want added.) very accurate and durable. I just love mine! I also agree on the pedometer part too. I did the same thing with the odometer LOL. Plus I love that it tracks my hrt rate in exercise mode, keeps track of how long I have been exersising. Shows me my high and low rates and the average of the entire workout. Plus the little alarm beeps if I fall below or go over my hrt rate. I also like the chest strap it's pretty comfy to me. The wrist sensors are not as accurate and I've been told you have to be standing still to take a reading. Good luck!

I agree 100% LCB!! I've had mine for over 2 years (nearly 3) and its never ever disappointed me .. and I wear it in less than stellar conditions (READ: SWEAT LIKE A PIG!) I've logged nearly 160,000 calories burned .. over 45 POUNDS!

              2 words:

              Garmin Forerunner.

              They're spendy, but they're spiffy!

The fine folks at ABTB bought me mine and it's awesome.

Thanks for the input ladies. I'll be getting one this week and with the help of my gf on her bike (which she has been doing now for a while with me) and www.mapmyrun.com I will be doing without the HRM that tracks my distance.

Thanks also for the tip on the Garmin Forunner, Brook. I was tempted with one, but they cost over £250. Well over $500. For that price I think I can do without it.

                  Hey Richt

There are several different models of the Forerunners than run anywhere from $130 to yep..upwards of $500. I have a ForeRunner 101 and while it doesn't track my heart rate, that thing is awwwwwwwwesome.

I'm glad you found something that'll work for you!!

What does the 101 do, Brook?

The only ones I have looked at were the forerunner 205 and 305.
