  • Ketosis before vs after exercise

I thought that exercise puts you further into Ketosis but I tested before (light mauve) and after walking today and after, the darn sticks didn't even turn. Any suggestions on this one?

Re: Ketosis before vs after exercise

I've never checked before and after walking, but I did after playing hockey and it was dark. Then there was this time last year when I cheated really bad and ate a piece of pie so I grabbed my bike and was very determined to burn off the pie immediately. I pushed myself to the limit, taking the hardest routes and never pausing, I pedaled until my whole body was burning (picture the pedals going down as I chanted "Bad Josie Bad Josie Bad Josie". Anyway, that night I was still in ketosis. So it may be that I can eat pie and stay in ketosis (ha!) or that yes, excercise does help you get into it better. Mine is barely pink unless I do intense excercise.

On the other hand, I've also heard that it's dark when you're dehydrated so it would also make perfect sense that I'm dehydrated after playing hockey or riding my bike like a maniac. Whereas if you're toting a water bottle on your walk, you wouldn't run into that problem.

you need to learn about how the body uses ketones and how those stix work. the stix measure the type of ketones that the human body burns for fuel not the other 2 types. in order for kthose ketones to make it onto the test stix you have to have an excess amount of them present in your blood stream not being burnred for fuel at the time that urine was being made so if you were exercises you should have been burning those ketones as fuel powering your muscles. Also ketone production needs you to be in oxygen debt as ketones are produceds as a means to remove the log jam of fatty acid oxidation by porducts and terminal acytel groups that can't be burned in the TCA cycle to make ATP. those chemicals are reacted and bundled togetehr and shipped out of the cell for other cells to like heart muscles to use as fuel allowing the fatty acid oxidation to continue. So you had to have lots of unburned ketones of the right type in your bloodstream wehn that pee was being made which is when stix color has nothing to do with weight loss.

2big - WOW! Thanks so much for the advice. I going to depend on the stix less and focus on what I am eating more.

2big, I got the first part down pat, but how/what is oxygen debt?

I've never had much luck with the stix, even when I first get up. How can I boost ketone production above the rate I'm burning them, to get them overproduced and peed & flushed instead of just burned. (In English, please, not Krebs)

Obviously that would make faster fat loss possible?

I'm in the same boat...I have actually hit the "small" color of the ketostick only once, however I, up until last week, was checking every bathroom break. I gave the stix up last week along with my scale...seems like I have given up so much in the past week. lol

Re: Ketosis before vs after exercise

first fatty acid is like the sugar burning for the final reactions and is actually converted to the exact same 2 carbon hydrocarbon for reacting in the mitochondrias. to occur oxygen is needed and when it doesn't have oxygen sugars slow at the 3 carbon stage to become latic acid and fats get processed to ketones for export from that cell to another area that will use them as fuel. as the final step of the 2 carbon cycle gives off more ATP and that is where everybody wants to be.

okay why stix are not your friend

who wants to be the lab rat that gets puprle stix guarentteed?????

okay just so you know what you are volunteering for
those that want to be purple go eat a box of butter with your dinner that should get you lovely excess ketones not being burned as fuel floating around in your blood stream ready to be peed out. of course you have now eatten more fuel then your body can burn so you will not be removing any fats molecules from your fat cells and thus your inches ansd sclae loss have stopped. Still want to be purple?????

there is an example in the faq explaining it but lets say Boonnie you are a regular exerciser DR ATKINS talks about in those charts in chapter 14 of the expected CCLL and you burn for this example 40,000 ketones a day as fuel and from your food you get 20,000 and from your fat cells you make another 20,000. since you don't have any excess ketones in your blood stream you will never get stix color and being losing weight but lamenting the fact your stix will not turn.

Now lets say some lurker reading this was foolish enough to volunteer to be the puprle one cause color is important to him. So he eats and makes 100,000 ketones from the butter ( I can't calulate the actual amount a box of butter will make as it has to do with the amount of oxygen presnet and how much fuel you actually burn) but is an exercise slacker and only burns 20,000 so he has 80,000 excess ketones floating around in his blood stream to have some spillover into the urine and make his stix turn purple. so he is now all excited cause he is dark burple but in 2 weeks he will delurk and complain that hw is in deep ketosis but gaining weight what is he doing wrong.

We can shed fat as ketones as acetone when we exhale and that is the fruity ripe apple breath Dr Atkins talks about, we can secrete them in our saliva which is the taste many folk talk about, we can pee them out or we can react them as fuel or make other compounds from them which works just as well since as those other chems they are not back in our fat cells as fat we can secrete fat also as fatty acids in the oil secreting sweat glands so there are several ways to rid ourselves of fat without actually burning it as fuel but using it up as fuel would be the prefferred way to rid yourself of it.
