  • Wisdom for runners...

I subscribe to Joe Henderson's weekly e-mail letter and often find wisdom to either motivate or keep me from discouraged. This week's was no different:
    http://www.joehenderson.com/archive/

Anyone who runs can win -- which isn't the same as saying that everyone always wins. You risk losing whenever you race, but the scoring is personal. No one can beat you but you.

Winning is running up to your own standard of success. Improving your distance or time. Running better in this race than your last one. Racing farther or faster than you would alone. Or simply being in the running and finishing what you started.

Yet my lines pale beside those of George Sheehan. ... It's George's line, "Winning is doing your best with what you're given."
Being a super competitive person, I appreciate this wisdom as much as anyone can. I know I am not going to win any race in terms of a trophy, but the fact that I am at the race in the first place is a win for myself. The fact that maintained a 8:40/mile average over 8 miles yesterday is a win. We each need to determine what our goal posts are. What do we need to do to win. For some, it might just be doing water aerobics for 2 or 3 days week. In the end for most of us, beating others' performance might only be ancillary to our achieving a win.

Find what your goal is today, and start working at achieving it.

    That's REALLY good, Kent!!

For me, winning is having the courage to start and the will to finish.

Kent, I am in awe that you can keep up a 8:40 minutes/seconds per mile over that distance. Great stuff.

And thanks for the informative post also.

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

The fact that I was running with a group and that the sky opened up with a Thunderstorm probably helped matters too. When you are 2 or 3 miles from your car being pelted with rain, all you can do finish the run home. Stopping would have only prolonged the torture. I am however jazzed that the McMillan race calculator has me running the upcoming Half Marathon in 1:39, but I suspect the number is probably closer to the other race predictor. RunPro, which says 1:57 (still beating my goal of 2 hours).

As I just stated in a new thread, Kent. I am entered for my first half marathon in September. I am aiming to beat around 2:20. We shall see.

Sorry to dredge up this old thread. The difference in projected race times between McMillan's calculator and RunPro (any of the predictors, actually) should only be a matter of seconds, not 18 minutes! If you saw that kind of time difference, there is something terribly amiss with one of the programs. Do you still see this kind of discrepancy between the two calculators?

BTW, how did you do in your 1/2?
