Well i'm back and i'm outta commission in regards to running. I'm thinking about doing some leg lifts daily and maybe some crunches if i can. I have some hand weights also that i'm gonna be using. I broke my other leg back in 95 and now the other. Just wondering if anyone has done the same and if you were able to go back to running...and how much longer after you recovered?

Re: Broken leg - NO RUNNING!
I'd say a lot depends on:
1. How bad / complicated the break is,
2. Your current fitness, bone and leg condition (prior to the break, of course),
3. Your BMI
3. Your general health status - age, nutrition, any health problems besides weight.
On the bright side - 3 -9 months, probably, will have you running some. Just go easy - a secondary injury greatly extends the healing time, and it's very easy to get one, if you push too soon with more strenuous exercise to the injusred area. Try swimming, then more and more walking, then increase walking speed; do steps cautiosly so you don't slip with the weak leg.
I did a massive compond arm fracture in '99, but had it fixed with metal plates. It's now my "bionic arm". I was using in a few weeks after the surgery.~Susan

Re: Broken leg - NO RUNNING!
See...that's like my other leg. I have 6 screws and plate in it. So my left leg is bionic. Now the other one was just a break. The bone didnt acutally seperate etc. I am gonna start off with walking first when i do get mobile. Before my accident i was running 1.5 - 3 miles daily. In the winter i was running 3 - 5miles daily. So i would say i was in good shape.

Re: Broken leg - NO RUNNING!
I think you'll do great! Just remember as you increase the (work)load on the leg, be sure to do it in small increments, and when the pain increases the next day, give the leg a break (pardon the pun).
You will recover faster since you are in shape and have taken off 60+ extra pounds. Weigh to go!~Susan

Hey! I know long time no see eh!
I broke it on July 27th. I go back to the dr. on the 31st to get re-xrayd! Then i should get my walking cast and i'll wear that for 4 -6 weeks depends he says. So looks like it will be a total of 9 - 11 weeks actual down time. After that who knows. He told me i cant run til maybe next year!

Re: Broken leg - NO RUNNING!
I broke it about mid way up the lower leg. THe fibula. It's broke in two places like a chunk out of the bone. IT didnt seperate so i didnt need surgery. Yeah....it's a bad fracture. I'm doing much better though. I'm just looking forward to the walking cast. I dont mind wearing that it's just walking around on crutches that's killing me. Did i mention i only have 14 more days of these dang things! My daughter is ready too. I'm her playmate outside. Dad is not to much on going out so she's been really stressing.
Get well wishes to your husband! I feel his pain!
