  • It doesn't add up

I have been looking at Higgies meticulous recording in Fitday - he puts me to shame.

I do notice that, like me, he is running a serious calorie deficit if the Fitday log is to be believed - but his weight is steady.

Me too. I am on about 2000cals a day as a 6ft 3in male - sometimes it climes to 2500cals - but I am cycling 25 miles a day at least. That should put me very well into deficit, but, like Higgies, my weight is steady.

(I might even be a couple of pounds heavier than 10 weeks ago without tighter trousers (pants) - muscle I guess (hope))

Last medical tells me I'm down 1Kg since Christmas, but there you go.

Enough waffle - how come Higgies and I seem to be in regular calorie deficit (20%?) without weight loss?
Atkins didn't say 'Calories don't count',
    he said, 'Don't count calories.'

      Re: It doesn't add up

Lots of times, I am in a calorie deficit too .. particularly on Saturdays when I run for over 3 hours at a time .. I can easily burn 1,200 calories or more, while my intake of calories is less than that. So why don't I lose? Cuz of the muscle mass. While its true that muscle and fat weigh the same, muscle is more dense. That *has* to show up somewhere ...somehow .. so if I weigh the same on less calories, the comfort is knowing that I LOOK SMALLER because I have better muscle tone.

Hey, IMO, its alot better to look smaller than to weigh less.

those formulas they use are for all folk your size and weight which we all know isn't the same. A very fit fellow will actually be using less muscle work riding the same ride as a not fit out of shape cyclist if your heart rate is in the zone when you do your 25 miles you know you are working harder then if it isn't. Also a marshmellow build will burn even less cals just being a live then a muscluar fellow for the same weight height and age yet they well get the exact same basal on fitday. jsut ignore their numbers for those events and concentrate on actually working out.

          To Betty

Yep: I weigh more at the same shape. More muscle.

          To 2Big

Yep: I guess what you mean is work harder and eat less and you might loose weight.

Ah well. It's all there in the laws of themodynamics:

You can't get owt for nowt.
