  • Early bird or night owl?

What time of day do you guys work out? I've been told that the morning is the best time to do it, and I know it kick-starts your metabolism, but I've been working out at night lately and it's been great. I've never been the kind of person who gets up at 5 am to go jogging!

I do both. I feel better if I walk first thing in the morning, then do my weights and ball exercises later in the afternoon, then do a final walk in the evening after dinner. I think that keeps my metabolism burning all day. If I don't work out later in the day I have a hard time sleeping.

I have also been told that the morning is the best time, but personally I prefer the evening for all of my excercising. I much prefer my bed first thing in the morning.

I am playing with the idea of going to the gym before work (which should be fairly easy as I work in the building next door to my gym, I just havent got around to it yet). I prefer the evenings though...........................

Run in the mornings before work...in the evenings, I work out with weights and floor work with Gilad on FitTV.

I definitely prefer the evenings. I've been trying to switch to mornings to help me sleep better, but it's been a bit difficult to drag out of bed at 5:15. I think I'm going back to evenings.

Not really a morning person. I run at lunchtime because I can (work from home) but when i'm not able to because i need to make a trip into the office, i try to drag myself out of bed and do it in the a.m. I find at night I make too many excuses.

When I go to the gym to do weights it's after 4 p.m. though...

I do better when I workout in the morning...otherwise, I might keep putting it off when I get home in the evenings and then never do it. Something always comes up.

I work out in the afternoon, when my son takes his nap. I am thinking about switching to mornings so I can use that nap time to do homework.

I work out in the early mornings, and if I have to leave, I will get up that much earlier, I can't be trusted to follow thru, after 2pm...just keep putting it off. I am a morning person...I will be hitting the bed at 9pm, struggling to make it thru Grey's....

Re: Early bird or night owl?

I've tried it all, from Step Aerobics at 5am to Yoga at 10pm. For me, early morning (5-7) is REALLY difficult--my muscles are tight, I have no flexibility and I don't feel that great during or after.

Mid-morning (8-11) is better--I've done Yoga, Kickboxing, Dancing, Running and Spinning in this time range. I usually feel pretty good when I'm done.

I've done lunch time classes, and those are kind of rough--only because it worked into my schedule to eat lunch FIRST! Blechhhhh.

My all time best workout slot is from 5-8pm. I used to go to kickboxing religiously (4 times a week) during this slot. I really felt awesome! I could chill out after work or classes, go have a great workout, and eat a good dinner afterwards.

Right now I work out from 3:30 to 4:30/5:00 on Mondays and Thursdays. I do water aerobics from 6-7 on Tuesday and Thursdays. Fridays I work out on my lunch "hour" (running/walking/elliptical) from 12-12:30, Saturdays I go running usually around 1 or 2, and Sundays I go for long walks (5+miles) with my bf in the morning. It would be better if I could exercise the same time everyday, but I try to fit it in when I can!

Re: Early bird or night owl?

I used to be a strict after-work runner. Every night near midnight, I'd be on the treadmill to get the burn, but a funny thing happened. Either I got lazier and waited until the next day or I got motivated to do it earlier in the same day , I switched to be a morning person. I also switched from being an inside vs. outside runner, and the outdoors is just so much nicer (less humidity, less traffic) in the morning. As long as you can be consistent, any time is a good one.
