  • Losing but my HIPS ARE HUGE!!!!

Okay, I think this is an exercise question. My problem is that while the rest of my body is looking smaller, my hips look like they are protruding more in relation to the rest of my body. I've been riding a stationary bike, doing equal amounts of upper body & lower body weight training, and fast walking for exercise. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to decrease my hips more so they're not so out of proportion?

Are you losing hip size? Or is it the same and the rest of you is shrinking?

My genes play against me. My hips and butt do look disproportionate too, even though I'm down to a size 4, 134 lbs at 5'3". I've had 2 kids in the last 4 years...but ALL of the women in my family, even the stick-skinny ones, have the classic "pear" shape.

That's a good question. I know Sarah (Iyamamashkey) had a similar problem. Her hips and thighs seemed to be resistent but they gradually got smaller and caught up to the rest of her shrinking self. They say the first place you put it on is usually the last place it comes off. Sarah might have some ideas for you.

Re: Losing but my HIPS ARE HUGE!!!!

I think alot depends on basic body shape and genetics, I don't have hip issues, but my stomach never seems to go down...and I know i most likely will have a belly no matter what I lose, because almost all the women in my family do. alot of it can be inherited unfortunately...

That said though..I did notice the one exercise that has change my hip/waist ratio the most has been running. My hips and waist are the smallest they've been, even though i weigh more than i have in the past.

Thanks for the running suggestion, Sadie!

Okay, so I didn't do the measurements. I'm just going by eye and the way my clothes are fitting. My waist & thighs are definitely smaller, but my hips look larger because they aren't shrinking as much. I don't have pear shaped genes so that's not it. I do have kids though, and this may just be a part of age. I want to get rid of the hips though!!! I'll keep losing and make sure I measure them. Has anyone gotten results from certain exercises to reduce their hips?

You might want to try doing more upper body exercises. As you build that muscle up, it will give the illusion of being more proportionate---until your hips begin to shrink like the rest of you.

Re: Losing but my HIPS ARE HUGE!!!!

Are your hips more muscular now? I notice that the more I work out, the more my actual shape changes, but it's due to muscle gain. I agree with sadie--running really tones you and works core, butt, and leg muscles together. Make sure you're not doing going overboard on the lower body weight training--do more reps at a lighter weight to tone, rather than fewer reps at a higher weight to build.

This stuff should help, but I'm betting that it's just a matter of time and your body will even out!

                        Profitweb,

                        How are you doing now?

I wanted to let you know that two weeks after I started that walk/jog DVD that everyone in my office kept telling me how much my hips had gone down.

Did you get that DVD? If so, have you noticed a difference there too?

I have saddlebags and I look at them everyday in the mirror. They do look like they are slimming down and more smooth from the hip to bag ratio.

Curious to see if this DVD is working for you too.

The hips in my family are legendary but alas, we are shaped in a way that doesn't make us look like freakshow rejects. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as spot reduction save liposuction...other than that, just keep going. Once you get to your goal, you may consider lipo. I hope this helps.
