  • Marathon Training

I was hoping someone could help out. I have just signed up for my first half marathon (it's not until May, but I really want to have this goal so that I feel I have something to work towards), but I've been training for a little bit now. I've started to work with a trainer and he has said that I should not follow Atkins while I'm training or running a marathon, but should have a diet where, approximately, 65% of my calories come from carbs.

My question is, for those of you who are also or have trained for a marathon, did you feel okay while on Atkins and training? My body responds to low carb...there's no denying that. And, I can not imagine adding in that much carb intake...my weight will sky rocket...

Any suggestions? Other than maybe getting a different trainer

    Thanks!!

    Re: Marathon Training

    Fresh off the press! lol

I did my first half marathon yesterday. I had been training for it properly since May of this year. Taking part in numerous races ranging from 3 miles to 10 miles with a couple off 11 mile training runs. I have been following Atkins now for almost 3 years, and since starting my training this year have not made any significant changes to my carb intake.

The only ill feelings I had after yesterdays race was that I felt sick about 10 minutes after finishing (in 2:30:29). I felt sick becaue I drank too much too quickly after completing.

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

      Get a new trainer.

I have run a full marathon, one 1/2 marathon, and too many 5ks, 10ks and 15ks to count ALL DOING LOW CARB. Not only that, I run upwards of 35 miles consistently EVERY WEEK.

Carbloading is a total and complete myth. You can train your body to run on whatever fuel you consistently give it. Lots of healthy fats, lean proteins and high fiber veggies and some fruit. That's it.

Goodluck with your training. I would suggest you follow this plan. This is the one I used for my marathon training. www.marathontraining.com
