Ok, the day started off well. Left home at 6:20am to get to Bristol for the 9:30 start. We were advised to get there as early as we could as there was going to be 15,000 competitors.
Race started off at 9.30, I went through the first mile in quite a slow pace - 9 minutes 15 seconds. But I was a bit cautious as I didnt want to burn myself out too early. At three miles I had to disappear into the bushes to <ahem> water a tree. I was desparate, and I wasnt the only person lol. There were little portable toilets by the side of the road, only a few and each one had a queue outside. There was no way I was going to waste time by queueing.
Carrying on, I got to the 7 mile mark in a little over 1 hour 10. And that is where I started to walk for the first time. Between mile 7 and 11 I walked / ran. (I think during the race I may have walked appoxmiately 2 miles maximum). Not that bad consideing I havent trained for 2 weeks due to my toe.
Got to the 11 mile mark and I vowed that I would run for the remainder of the course. Got to the 12 mile mark and that is where I knew I was nearly there. I ran the last mile really a lot quicker than the others, flying past many many other people. Finished the race in a time of 2:31:29. I am not that happy with the time as I was aiming for 2 hours 15. But atleast I finished it. I am blaming my slower time on the heat and the fact that I hadnt done anything in the last 2 weeks. I was probably one of the luckier ones, as there were quite a few people who had collapsed on the side of the road. It wasn't very nice seeing people let there with a oxygen thing attached to their faces.
I am glad I did the race, and am now aiming at another half marathon in about a months time.
I have received a phone call from the charity that I ran for saying that they would like to put something about me with a photo of me receiving my medal in the local newspaper. (a nice souvenir for me anyway).
Thanks for reading.

Congrats on an awesome race, Rich...even with a little detour
.

Battle scars, I call them! Rich, hope the blister heals well for you .. I had one under the nail of my big toe after the marathon .. TALK ABOUT PRESSURE .. I had to pierce the nail with a pin many times to release the fluids ...
