This is from one of the stickies, have a look at this site there are printable lists of exercises ranging from beginner to advanced, including abs, that you may want to try out: http://sparkpeople.com/resource/exercises-printable.asp
i love ab exercises since i'm already shaping my midsection, nearly a six pack. anyways i recommend doing "flutter kicks, leg lifts, crunches, decline sit-ups and steam engines".
my motto is "no pain no gain", just like the military. i'll be honest though, not all people in the military are in shape like what some people may think. i've put a lot of hard work and effort into my diet and exercise to achieve the weight loss and physique i'm in now. it's never too late to change your life, you may have to just take it easy one day at a time until you can push yourself hard enough. you don't need fancy equipment or dvds to teach you how to work out... trust me on this.

Pilates is amazing for core strength. If you don't have access to Pilates, another good exercise for lower abs is a modified crunch. Instead of having knees bent and together, cross your legs (criss cross applesauce is what we tell little kids) like a pretzel so they are on the floor, doing full crunches or pulses that way.

I disagree, though you're right not everyone needs dvd's to teach them to workout, but many do. I really do better with a demo of an exercise, than trying to learn it from a picture on the web or in the book. You're best to know the proper form, which is what most dvd's stress..so you don't hurt yourself.
How would someone know what "flutter kicks, leg lifts, crunches, decline sit-ups and steam engines" are if they've never seen them done? I don't think looking at pictures or descriptions of exercises is adequate if you are not familiar with them.
I like the reverse crunches. Laying flat on back and with legs straight, slowly lift them to a 90 degree angle (straight up in the air) and slowly lower. Do three sets of these at twelve per set and you will be so sore the next day. But it feels o so good.

i'm pretty sure if you looked on www.youtube.com you would find free demonstrations of ab work outs. i honestly have never looked for ab workout there but you can literally find any video on that site.

Jimmie, I actually use sparkpeople instead of fitday for my food logging too. I find it far superior to fitday. It has a much more extensive food db...and having a great exercise db is a bonus too!

Ok, maybe that is so..but personally i wouldn't do exercises with my laptop in front of me, or on the floor of my office in front of the pc.....I dunno maybe it's just personal preference, but i find it easier to do exercises along with an instructor on a television. To each his own I suppose.
Dvd's are pretty cheap now....I still think they're a great and inexpensive option.
