  • Army 10 Mile Run 08OCT06 Al Asad, Iraq

Results 1 Hour 40 Minutes and 12 Seconds.

Jogged the entire way in boots and utes(aka military pants and combat boots) plus flak jacket(aka bullet proof vest). can't wait to receive the pictures from the event. they said they would show footage stateside from the run in Iraq so if you see a guy running in a bullet proof vest that is me(since i was the only one who ran like that). overall i think i would have done much better if i just ran in shirt and shorts but this was good body conditioning for me. if you set your mind and heart to it you can do anything.

unfortunately i did not do it low carb. i know tt driver has been able to do it low carb but she is a season runner and i'm a complete newb to long distance running. i prepared myself 2 days prior to the race adding carbs into my diet like oatmeal, bannanas, gatorade and power bars. overall the carbs really helped me out in my opinion. this run was no joke in combat boots and flack jacket and probably would have been much easier on my body if i just ran in shirt and shorts. me being the type of guy to experiment and see what i could handle i had nothing to lose. i was very surprised and proud of myself that i ran the entire time without stopping. sure i was running slightly slower due to carrying excess weight but i got a good time for what i had to endure. i'm still debating whether i should run boots, utes and flack for the 26.2 marathon. i'm alloted 15 minutes a mile(which i can practically walk) so if i can run 10 miles wearing an extra 40lbs what could 26.2 miles do? just the thought of finishing a race in that gear motivates me to really do it, but not without training first.

overall i started off slow with the majority of people passing me but after the first 5 miles i picked up the pace and toward the last stretch started passing people.

OMG, how hot was it. I know it cools off a bit in October, maybe to the 90ies.

LOL you do know that those carbs you loaded were gone in the first few min of the run and youwere running on fat reserves unless you reloaded during the race.

if you train in the gear you should be able to run in the gear. remember too you will be lighter by pounds when you do the marathon so you should be able to carry the extra weight if you have been training in them but the cooling of your body and the perpiration evaporation and chaffing might be more your concerns at that distance.

we ran around 7am and the weather wasn't too hot overall. it was hot in the beginning to me because the jacket was building up heat but once my internal cooling system(aka sweat) kicked in i adjusted to the heat. i carried a power bar during the race and started eating it after the 6-7 mile point, i was really hurting then thats for sure. maybe the carbs are a placebo affect to me but it's better to be safe than sorry. i mean if proffesional marathon runners didn't recommend carbs then why wouldn't they be that important in a race. thats what i've been reading up on when it came to marathon training advice, not to carb load but to definately eat a certain amount of carbs.

Re: Army 10 Mile Run 08OCT06 Al Asad, Iraq

Basically because they confuse glycolisis with glucose and glycogen. many folk do not know that the fat molecules in our bodies are proceeseed to run in both the anerobic section of the cycle as glucose and the aerobic part of that process as fsatty acids to make eneregy for the anerobic part of the total energy system and that more of the anerobic energy is produced carbon for carbon with a fat then a carbohydrate.

did you know the head of Atkins right after Dr Atkins died was a bone doc and an ultra marathoner who started doing Atkins cause all that running didn't shed his excess weight? He trained for the iron mans the NYC and the BOston marathon using Atkins WOE.

if your read your book you will see that we are alowed to eat as many carbs as our metabolism and our what Dr Atkins referred to as active life style will allow. He even has an area in the CCLL charts discussing vigorous execiers. When I was lifting several hours and doing cardio 3 times a week and doing HIIT the other 3 plus the 10K aday program during my weight losing time I could eat over 115 net carbs a day. you will see the more you train the more carbs you can consume as part of your Atkins.

very true about the increased carbs for really active people, i just kinda skimmed through that section because it didn't pertain to me when i first read it. i only focused on the main points of the diet rules in dandr when i did atkins. 115 net carbs is a lot, that could be anywhere from 150 to more than 200 carbs once you factor in all the fiber and sugar alcohol etc....

anyways how do i feel after the run? well the motrin finally wore off and i'm in immense pain just from walking. i didn't develop blisters but i'm thinking the constant pounding with the combat boots and extra weight put some serious stress on my foot bones. i'll give it until thursday to get better otherwise i will see my doctor(thank goodness i work for one). i will definately not run boots, utes and flack for the 26 mile marathon on the 29th, shirts and shorts is all i'm going to tolerate. my metabolism is definately pretty high since i'm not gaining weight, the only thing i haven't figured out yet is my actual max carb tolerance level in a day. i'm not stressing though, as long as i eat healthy and exercise on a routine basis i'm good.

I had to cut mine back to 45 when i had surgery on my knees.

ouch on the feet. finding your daily carb limit is the role of OWl so have fun checking out the foods.
