I weigh 282 lbs and have heard wonders about spinning classes. How they really take the weight off etc. However, the ones i have seen no one there looks like they need to lose weight especially not the significant kind like i do. Does anyone have any experience with these. Do heavy people join them? Is the class done in the dark? Should i get my exercising under my belt first and then join?

I would appreciate any advice/information on how to get involved with a spinning class.

    Thanks!!!

    Re: Spinning

I go occasionally to spinning classes. Although they are known as RPM where I live, but they are essentially the same things.

Its hard work but the rewards are also good. Try it and see how you get on.

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Maybe before you sign up, talk to the instructor, and then make a decision.

        Thanks Richt and MissPhode.

I am planning to talk to an instructor - i would do so anyway before starting any class just to get some idea of how they teach it, but i was also looking for some information from people who have done them, especially people who have done so before losing all of their weight. The instructor will be able to say yes or no to whether or not at my weight will be beneficial or loads of frustration or if i should wait, i am sure, but it would help to have some forsight information on it. If that makes sense.

        Thanks though.

Out of interest, how long do your spinning classes last? Mine goes on for 45 minutes.

            Re: Spinning

I've taken spinning classes that were an hour long, and WOW they are a workout! The good thing about them is that your bike and your resistance is controlled by you--so you can take the workout up or down a level as you need to. I will warn you, the classes I've taken are pretty intense, and it might be a thing where you'd want to work up to a spinning class.

How strong are your legs? Do you have weak joints? In the classes I've taken, there's a LOT of standing and squatting, lots of ups and downs, not just sitting and pedaling. I would say it's not a great choice for someone with weak knees or ankles...but I suppose the class could be modified to fit those needs. And yes, the classes I've been in have been in the dark or with low lights--I think usually because they're in such small rooms and the participants get so hot, it's just a temp. control thing, not ambience or romantic lighting LOL.

From what it looks like they are 45 minutes here also.

Thanks julirama, that's what i was wondering, i do have bad knees and ankles, but i usually have to work through that no matter which exercise i am doing. I have braces also. I was wondering if maybe it would be something i should work up too, i am completely out of shape. Maybe i will get my exercising dedicated and work up on the stuff i can do with no prob. devil machine, etc and get that up in time and them try one when i am lighter, which will be better on my knees and ankles.

                I appreciate everyone's input.

                  Re: Spinning

Something that is really good for knees and ankles is using an elliptical machine. It sort of simulates walking or running, and you can change the resistance and ramp to make it easier or more difficult. It's much more joint-friendly than a treadmill.

Water aerobics or swimming is great too, if you have joint problems. The water alleviates pressure, and yes, you can get a GREAT workout in a pool!
