  • What is a Respectable 5K time?

I would like to enter a 5K, however I do not want to embarrass myself either.

In the past I have done 3 miles in about 30 mins.

Right now I am at 2 miles consistently between 22-23 mins.

The respect comes from having the courage to try.

My first one was 48 minutes and I was thrilled. Just to say "I DID IT" was enough at that point. That was January, 2004.

My most recent was 30:36 and that was October 14, 2006.

As my friend, John Bingham says: "The miracle isn't that I finished; its that I had the courage to start."

I am with Betty and 2big. It is performing the best you can do that day. Respect is something that you give yourself when you look in the mirror and show what more you can do today than yesterday. Running for me is not so much a competitive sport against others but against myself -- the desire to be lazy, the temptation to return to easier days of not having to work in exercise, etc.

Further to what everyone else has said. Its also likely to depend on the terrain and also the "undulation" of the course. If its hilly it is likely to be slower etc.

Also, if you are running 2 miles in 22 minutes. Its unlikely you will embarass yourself. The winner is likely to finish in around 17 minutes (depending on the quality of the field) and the last place finishers are likely to be around 45 minutes. So 3 miles in 33 minutes will be quite respectable.

          It does come over time.

Re: What is a Respectable 5K time?

These seem like pretty good times for me too. However, as already said, it really doesn't matter in what time you complete the race, its taking the intial step to enter and run the race that makes you a winner.

It sounds like the motivation is already there, let us know when you are doing a race and we will cheer you on.

Thanks for all the thoughts, I appreciate it. I am going to start looking for a 5k in my area to enter.
