  • Power walking questions

Is power walking effective in burning fat and calories? I really dont enjoy running anymore like I used to. I have been power walking on my treadmill for 30 minutes every day for a week and now I am power walking for 40 minutes and I plan to keep adding time to my power walking every week. I keep my speed around 4.0 miles per hour. Is it as effective as other carido work outs?

I really just want to know of all the benefits of power walking for losing weight, if anyone can help me out, that'd be great! Thanks!

    Re: Power walking questions

There is an equation for cardio workouts. It seems to me it is 50% increase in heart rate. So if you heart rate is a normal 80 you would need to choose and excercise program that would increase it to 120/min. I'll be checking out under the American Heart website. They have the info.

YES! Power walking is an excellent cardio workout, nearly on the same level as jogging, depending on how you're doing it. I power walked for over a year when I first started Atkins and the weight loss was phenomenal! GREAT JOB! Keep it up!

power walking is great I walked all the way to goal. just remeber as you get more efficient you will need to increase your spoeed and/or incline to get the same effect for your time spoent on the treadmill. I moved from 3 MPH to 7.7MPH walking and upped the incline to 7 over the past 4 yrs.

            Re: Power walking questions

I have little ankle and arm weights that I use when I go out power walking - lots of sports shops have them. They just give you a little more resistance.

            I'm rubbish at jogging!!! hehe!

jane be very careful with your ankle weights as they have studies showing movement with them like walking and other cardio exercising can cause knee injuries. just sitting and working out using then for resistance is okay though
