  • Gluteus Maximus Trouble

    Female, 48, 5ft 3, 318 pounds.

Lately I have had increasing pain and stiffness in my hip/buttock area.

I usually do water aerobics at least three times a week and every Wednesday I have a massage. Masseuse detected "knots" so deep in my gluteus maximus they were beyond her. I've had two nights' disturbed sleep cos of the pain. Yesterday I saw a therpaist who made me scream and sob in pain as she dug deep into the "gloots". Afterwards I could stand up straight at last.

I'm still sore from the treatment, but I think it has worked. She told me to "take it really easy for a few days", and I am upset because it has broken the momentum I had built up with my water aerobics. Also, on Monday I joined the gym and paid a year's membership. I've also bought a small home gym and I am keen to start using it.

Worst of all, I've worked hard to build up my stamina and I'm worried that if I lay up for a few days I'll feel too fat and lazy to get started again.

I'm wondering if anyone on this board knows about these "gloots" and why I have developed this problem. Is it my obesity? Is it that I have been too strenuous in my water aerobics? Is it some other reason I cannot think of? Are there movements I should avoid making in the pool?

Are there any movements / exercises/ stretches I can do NOW to put my "gloots" right? Is there anything I can do to prevent this happening in the future?

    Thanks in anticipation, Helena

    Re: Gluteus Maximus Trouble

Sorry I've never had this issue, but I will say that one of the best therapies for muscle issues is rest. Is it possible you can maybe do a different exercise while your letting your glutes rest? Maybe something like non impact and more of a streching exercise like yoga or pilates would be better, and may even help.

I would definately follow your therapists advice to take it easy for a few days.

      Re: Gluteus Maximus Trouble

I experienced this pain a few days ago, but then again it as after using a lower body work out by Joyce Verdal and being quite honest I"ve never done any "sculpting" for my lower body yet. It was so fainful it was hard for me not to waddle while I walked.

however, mine went away ((probably due to youth)) by walking it off and stretching it out.

I think you just strained your muscles with your work out and they were just crying, "Enough, enough!" Perhaps you should just tone it down an inch or two

when you had your blood work done doidyour doc check your electrolytes and stuff? could be you got low and muscle fibers will lock up when they don't get thier chemicals. if all your levels were normal then you could have injured them with all the sitting you did driving around on your trip as you would be clinching then for balance as the car changes direction or moves around curves.

        hope you get better soon.

I'm so glad cause not only does the exercise help burn cals and tone muslces but it also uses up stress hormones and generates feel good ones too.
