My husband bought me a treadmill for christmas. I have been walking everynite but my quiestions are

    1. How fast should i be walking just starting out?
    2. How long should i be walking to burn fat?
    3. My dh says i have to have my heartrate up to at least 130 to burn fat, is that true?

Last night i walked 1.69 miles ranging 2 to 3 miles per hour. Is that suffecient or should i be walking faster?

To answer your first question Tracie, the is no set limit or figure that you "should" be walking, just do as much as you can. Over time your distances will increase naturally.

It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

      Re: Walking

You will want to walk at a pace that challenges you, makes you sweat, but does not injure you or put you in pain. Start slow, and work yourself up. One thing that I like to do on the treadmill is a distance interval program. Pick a "recovery" speed, something that's not overly challenging, and pick a "sprint" speed that is faster, and quite challenging. Walk .10 miles at the recovery speed, then .10 miles at the sprint speed. Keep alternating until you reach a mileage goal, or a time goal, or simply until you've had a good workout! When you're ready, increase the "sprint" time so you're walking at recovery speed for .10, then at sprint speed for .15. Keep increasing the duration of the quicker speed when you feel comfortable. As time goes on, I'm sure you'll be able to increase both the recovery and sprint mph.

Whatever you do, don't do the same thing all the time. Keep your muscles working and keep challenging them with different programs, speeds, intensities, and durations.

          Re: Walking

I think maybe he is confusing cardiovascular benefit with fat burning. If you walk at 2 miles an hour for 3 days straight (I know who could do that), you would burn a bunch of fat. Any exercise has the ability to burn fat. But to strengthen your heart you have to put stress on your heart. And walking very slowly has very minimal benefit for the heart.

Any exercise is better than no exercise. And more intense is in general better than less intense. But your ARE burning fat.
