It never ceases to amaze me of how easy and how effective this ***diet*** is!!

I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

Ok--I'm jumping in here Betty. I started in a walking challenge at that other unnamed site. I'd like to continue to record my miles and make my slow transisiton to (gulp) running right here. If that's ok. As I said before, I'm ramping up but it might be awhile before I can actually start running much. I live in Ohio and it's supposed to start snowing in the next day or so. I can walk at the mall during the bad weather but if I start running around there someone is liable to think I'm a theif and try to tackle me or something...

Anyway, I think I've logged about 30 miles so far this month, including todays hoofing around so how about I just start there?

What kind of shoes do I need for a beginning runner and how exactly should I start? And how far should I try to go? I want to know exactly what to do.

            Thanks!

Rich, YOU GOT IT! Our own support group!!

Teri, that's GREAT that you've logged 30 miles this month already! AWESOME! As for the shoes, I would invest in RUNNING SHOES .. not crosstrainers or walking shoes, but specifically designed running shoes. My own personal preference is New Balance because I have narrow, bony feet that require good cushioning and support.

The best advice I could give on shoes would be to visit a specialty running store if you have one in your area. They should be able to fit you with a running shoe that matches your particular gait. Test them out .. run outside in them (weather permitting) and see how they feel on the pavement. There's no way to judge a shoe by trying it on carpeting. You need to see how much cushion there is in the shoe. Buy a shoe a full size larger than your regular street shoes as your feet swell as you run and you need the room.

Personally, if I were beginning a running program, I would use the Couch to 5k program at coolrunning.com. I know alot of people who have started with it and developed into great runners! I didn't use it; didn't know about it until I had mastered a few 5ks, but looking at the program, it looks very doable for a beginner.

Slow, steady, persistent progress is what you want to strive for. To further aid you, consider investing in a heartrate monitor. I'm sold on Polar and have had the M61 model for several years. Its performed flawlessly, even through this vulgar heat and humidity we have here in central Florida. So far, I've logged over 600 running hours with it and its never failed me. Keeping track of your heartrate (and KEEPING IT IN THE FAT BURNING ZONE) will go a very long ways toward improving your cardiovascular health and your running stamina and endurance.

              Hope that helps!
