  • Cardio and Resistance Training in the Same Day?

HI - I am new to exercising and wanted to know if I am doing the right thing by walking/(with a bit of jogging) 2 miles + doing a Curves workout on the same day?

I did this on Tuesday for the first time and I was REALLY sore the next day. I'm feeling much better today because I have rested (from Curves) for a day, but am supposed to go back today with my sister.

Should I do one or the other? I just do not want to over do it and then lose interest - I'm trying not to sabatoge myself.

    Thanks for any input!

You may want to take it easy in the beginning. After you become a "regular" exerciser and need to up the intensity, you could absolutely do both cardio and strength on the same day.

      Thanks Joy -
I didn't want to wimp out because I am SO motivated!! I know this is the way to get true long lasting results, but I also do not want to do the self-sabatoge thing.
I think I'll just do Curves and my crunches tonight.
If I would have gotten a bike for X-mas like I wanted I think I would have no problem doing the two miles, but walking seems to take a long time. My husband got me BEAUTIFUL diamond earings for Christmas, and I NEVER thought I'd say this, but I really did want a bike! Those earings are not doing a thing for the flab! LOL!! (Although they do dress it up a bit!!

Enjoy your earrings and do the walking. Yes its slow, but two miles walking is MUCH more exercise than 2 miles on the bike. It works more muscles, and you are trying to build muscle here

Ok! Good to know- I really thought they were the same. I have so much to learn about this exercise business. But, Muscle is good, I used to have nice legs, it will be good to get those back!

Thank you SO much for your time!

Re: Cardio and Resistance Training in the Same Day?

Hi Stella! I started by using all my pent up motivation and jumping in with doing strength training and cardio each day for 5 days a week. I figured I would make that into a habit before my excitement wore off... The soreness is a good thing, it means you're tearing your muscle fibers. *ANY* form of exercise in the beginning is better than none though, so just make sure you don't give up the cardio portion. I believe they're now saying it should be 30 minutes a day instead of 20 minutes a day, so it should definitely take less time than that for 2 mi on a bike.

            Anyway, good luck.

Re: Cardio and Resistance Training in the Same Day?

My cardio and weight training overlap several days a week. I do cardio every morning six days a week, and I do weigh training every other day during the evening.

If you are doing them both during the same work out, you'll burn more fat if you do the cardio after the resistance training.
