  • TTDRIVER, What did I do?

    Ok,

It started out real innocently. DW and I were discussing what we were going to do with our income tax check this year. Usually, it pays off a bill or is used for a large purchase (refrigerator, big TV, etc.) or a home improvement of some kind.

The discussion took a new twist and we decided to take a family vacation instead. After a while, we determined Disney World would be perfect. Our two boys will be 10 and 11. Perfect.

The next part is a blur.

We are going next January and now I am registered for the Goofy Race and a Half Challenge. Yes, that's a Half Marathon on Satuday and a full marathon on Sunday. I am already running the Chicago Marathon in October. That's 2 and a half marathons in 3 months!

I have obviously lost my mind.

Any tips on training for 2 marathons within 3 months?
    Any tips on running Disney?
I am used to running in January here in Michigan (Temps in the 20s or so.). How do I prepare for 80s?

Are you running Disney again next year? Why or why not.

Sorry for all the questions. I haven't been this excited in a while. Feels good.

WOW, RICH, WHEN YOU GET STARTED, THERE'S NO STOPPING YOU!! YOU'RE SIGNING UP FOR EVERYTHING! GOOD FOR YOU! That's plenty of motivation to keep your training going!!

Any tips on training for 2 marathons within 3 months?

Yes. Two words: Glucosamine & chondroitin. Invest in alot of it. Your joints will be taking a BEATING .. and you need to take care of them. I swear by this stuff. Pack lots of vaseline and COAT your feet with it. I mean SLATHER IT ON. I couldn't have made it without it.

    Any tips on running Disney?

Yes. Don't plan to PR. The route is crowded and at times, obstructed. Especially running through Animal Kingdom & MGM. By the time you get to mile 20ish, the parks are open to the public, so the running lanes are narrow and you have to allow for pedestrians crossing in the middle of where you're trying to run!

Pray for cool weather. After running 26.2 miles on January 7th in 86 degree heat and humidity to match .. that's all I can tell you. Train the best you can through the HEAT of your summers, so you can be ready for the Florida heat. Invest in a fuel belt and use it. Don't forget sunscreen....I got a whale of a suntan during the marathon. There is very little (if any) shade.

I am used to running in January here in Michigan (Temps in the 20s or so.). How do I prepare for 80s? Well, you could turn your shower on as hot as it will go and run around in it for 3 or 4 hours .. that's about the closest thing to running in Florida heat that I can think of. I'd buy some Electromix powder and be sure you have it mixed in your water bottles. You can't believe how fast this heat/humidity will zap your strength.

Are you running Disney again next year? Why or why not. Definitely not. Personally, I think most folk sign up for Disney races BECAUSE ITS DISNEY .. not because they love to run and try to PR. I mean I saw ALOT of people stopping along the route to have their pix taken with Goofy, Donald, the 7 Dwarfs, Peter Pan, Cinderella, etc. Like I said, they sign up because ITS DISNEY first and a marathon second. I wouldn't run it again because its alot of concrete .. I mean I can do concrete for 10-12 miles, no problem, but 26? Its a beating. Especially through the parks and the sidewalks. Find yourself a good massage therapist now and reserve a spot for the day after the Goofy Challenge .. I had a massage the day after the marathon and IT RAWKED !

Don't get me wrong; I LOVE DISNEYWORLD. I'd just rather not run through it, yanno? Although I must say, the medal is pretty daggone cool !

    GOOD LUCK MAN !!
