This was my first race of the year. Weather at the start was about 45 degrees, overcast, with a little breeze. Perfect.
Started out nice and easy around 11 minute/mile pace. Had to make a bathroom pit stop only a mile and a half in.
Thought I had taken care of everything before hand. Anyways, after the couple of minute detour, back on the course.
Went back out and tried to hold a 10:40 pace for the rest of the race. This was one of those runs where the whole thing seemed pretty effortless. I enjoyed it immensely. I always run races with my younger brother. I'm 35 and he's 29. He's losing weight on Weight Watchers and of course I'm doing Atkins. 13 miles of shooting the breeze, encouraging other runners and just taking in the sights. The race was well organized and provided plenty of support along the way. They had Ultima (instead of Gatorade or Powerade) for the race. Not as good tasting as the others, but since it doesn't have the carbs of the others, a very good Atkins friendly race drink.
The last mile or so, tried picking up the pace to about 10 minute miles. Worked real well until the big hill about a half mile from the end. Slowed back to my target pace and finished with a smile on my face with a finishing chip time of 2:20:58 or 10:46 minutes/mile. I'll take it.
Next race is a trail marathon on April 29th. The longest trail race I've done is 5 miles (and that was hard). It should be a real challenge with a ton of steep hills.
Sorry to ramble on. You know how runners are.
