  • Ok Exercise is not my strong point! I need support!!

ok here it is, as much as i hate and dread my exercise, I know i have to do it. for about a month and a half i get on the treadmill and i walk @ 3 to 3.5 mph for 30 minutes,( about 1 1/2 mi.) i thought for sure by this point i would be able to either walk faster or longer (actually both). Well this is where i get most discouraged. I cannot seem to get past the 30 minutes. When i get to 26 minutes i see the end and thats it. What im asking everyone is how long did it take you guys to get to the point where you can actually run 2 miles and more. I can barely walk it. Is it because im still to heavy or is a month and a half just not enough time to improve or is it i am just pschologically lazy? Please let me know your experiences with the treadmil. Thanks

hey...i can't say that i love exercise but i DO love the way i feel when i am FINISHED. tons of energy and all that good stuff....plus when i work that hard, it makes me think twice before i would do something stupid.

i used to be a big gym rat....and even now i work out pretty good but i did not start out like that,,,,it starts small and then grows to this huge exercise monster and pretty soon you will be scheduling it into your day and getting really irked at anything that comes between you and the elliptical....baby steps! you will get there!

I dread thinking about going to the gym. But I feel fantastic leaving. I feel so accomplished. As for the treadmill? I never use it, I like walking outside. But yesterday I did do the eliptical for the first time. I liked it!

After 30 minutes on the treadmill I'm pretty bored and I usually stop there too. You might try what I do which is to immediately go into another type of exercise. A video, some crunches, or maybe weights, anything different that still has a positive effect.

bad, it's going to vary person to person. the fact that you got started is a plus and the fact that you posted gets you another plus.

first, you gotta like what you're doing. hate it = not doing it.

when you start feeling what exercise can do and you start seeing the results of what exercise can do, it's going to help you do more and with more intensity.

there are so many challenges to take part in on this board. some are a join anytime and no time like the present and others go month to month but would be glad to have you a part of the group.

Like the others have said, do something that you like, or at least something you can tolerate.

The important thing is to start small. Each time you walk or exercise on the treadmill, push yourself to go JUST ONE MINUTE longer. So instead of going for 30 minutes, go for 31 minutes. The next time you're on, go for 32 minutes. Next time, 33 minutes, and so forth. Too often people try to do something too drastic and either burn out or give up. Start small!

and i would just die if i did not have my TUNES to exercise with......i go out into the garage, turn up the noise really loud and start to huff and puff....kind of hard NOT to work when you "got rhythm."

i tell my daughter...sometimes we have to do things for our bodies that we do not like but do it just because it is good for us. do i ALWAYS like eating "green food?" do i always feel like that extra bottle of water....sometimes that darn vitamin hurts my tummy/.///

in the end we will all feel better, sometimes getting there is not fun...but for me, neither is being overweight!!!

Re: Ok Exercise is not my strong point! I need support!!

I would quit from BOREDOM if I did the same thing every day. From what I understand, doing the same thing over and over makes your body expect the same and become too efficient at it. So much so, we don't get the same milleage out of it.

Add a variety of workouts. It'll keep your body guessing and then when you do use the treadmill, it won't be the same-ol', same ol. I'm about the same weight as you with a crappy leg/knee; I'm doing some walking, some biking, some videos (although more for movement than actually keeping up with them at this point), started abs recently, going to start more weights that goes with another video. I have the stability ball but a little too nervous to use it yet; I lost my balance and landed hard on a knee, can't risk that quite yet unless I figure out a way to support myself better. But I'll tell you what, that was fun and the stretching I got from it was incredible! Looking forward to swimming again, too.

Another thing I want to do is more hiking than just walking. Boy, do the muscles in the feet get a workout from the uneven surfaces! Unfortunately, that'll be a while yet. The one exercise I may never achieve is running; depends on the knees later and a condition I have in one leg. I want to roller-skate later, though.

Anyway, in a nutshell, the keyword is VARIETY! And let the others' excitement become infecting - I get SO fired up to do mine when others are so excited about doing theirs! I even took on a "challenge" to ride my bike in 27-degree weather for 5 miles (and it even snowed some!) the other night. It was a blast! First time for everything! My big goal is doing Tae Bo! That looks like TOO much fun! Need stronger knees and muscles first... If your knees and muscles are good, you might be able to do that now, even if you modify it some.

Re: Ok Exercise is not my strong point! I need support!!

I agree with everyone else. variety really is the key to getting started. If you do the same thing day in and day out, it gets boring real fast and if you're already reluctant to do it in the first place, that's all the excuse you need to stop.

There's another exercise that's REALLY different and a challenge! Try some yoga. Not the ol' hippy "ommmmmm" type. The "kick you in the asset" challenging ones like Denise Austin's Fat-Blasting Yoga! Oh - MY - GOD!! You'll be in a dead sweat in no time and, if you're like me, laughing your butt off at the sheer challenge of them! You won't be bored with that in your collection!
