  • EXcersice makes you gain weight???

    I'm a little concern that starting to do kickboxing could probably make me gain weight. Is it possible???

    In short yes very possible.

    Muscle weighs a lot more than fat.

    I have since re-gained a bit of weight, but that is soon to be coming off again!

      Oh yes. I've started with weights and it popped up a lb and if I'm doing a pretty good weights 5x a week, it can pop up to 2lbs. Your body holds on to water to repair itself.

      But muscle is denser than fat.

        JUst to let you know, yes you will probally bounce around on the scales for a couple of weeks, from my experience i have been excercising for 6wks and i went up and down 10lbs and i lost a total of only 5lbs but i lost 18.75 inches all over, so you will shrink but the scale might not show you the numbers right away!!!!

          Thank you for all your reponses guys. I really appreaciate it. Now I;m thinking about postponing the whole exercise idea because I don't want to stop my weight loss. Thanks again.

            DONT POSTPONE your exercise. With out exercise you will not lose that much weight at all.

            Exercise is a priority.

              Yeah, look at TTdriver. She exercises all the time, and um...she's not fat. Look at Outback Jess. I doubt she would have had the success she's had if she didn't exercise. Same with Julirama, Validrouge, Richt, Higgies, Kent, and all the folks I'm missing. All of our big success stories on the board have exercised their butts off, and their bellies, and thighs....
              So while adding exercise to your routine may temporarily show a slight increase on the scale, you're going to be stronger and slimmer and trimmer and healthier. You'll build muscle which burns fat. Don't avoid exercise because you're afraid of a little temporary water retention. Exercise will not make you fat.

                  Whoa! Don't do that!! It's that active muscle that eats up the blobby fat and makes you smaller, even while you may weigh more!! I was in a stall and actually gained two pounds and was STILL getting smaller, because of my workouts!

                  It's a whole different mentality! You may gain a bit temporarily but as long as your inches are getting smaller and your clothes are fitting better, that weight gain is a GOOD thing! It'll come back off! Trust us!

                    Hi Bee,

                    YES totally do go along - exercise it what really kickstarts your metabolism.

                    Go and have a look in Julirama's journal - she has been regularly kickboxing for ages and looks FAB, as well as having lost lots of lbs.

                    I am really keen to try kickboxing - I need to find a class.

                    Hope it's fun

                      Your goal shouldn't be to necessarily weight XXX lbs, but to be at a desired body fat percentage. You can still hit whatever the target weight may be, but at the same time, you may have a higher body fat percentage weighing 10 lbs less than a more muscular weight.

                      Remember, a lower body fat will result in a higher metabolism and a higher body fat will result in a lower metabolism.

                        Yes, don't think of losing WEIGHT, but losing POUNDS OF FAT. Replacing the fat with lean muscle is the goal! Muscle is active tissue, meaning it burns calories just to maintain itself. Fat just sits there. Exercise helps you lose inches. I had a month where I didn't lose a single "pound" on the scale, but went down a whole pants size. And it doesn't matter what you weigh, your body will be smaller. I'm wearing size 10 pants today. And do you know how much I weigh? 189 pounds. Thanks to exercise, my body is decievingly smaller-looking than the scale says!

                        And lets focus on the OTHER benefits of exercise for a minute. Besides revving up your metabolism and helping you lose fat, it makes you feel GREAT. I am actually a little bit down on my rest day because I'm not exercising. That glow after you get done with a tough workout is one of the best feelings in the world.

                          Man, it's reports like this that totally blows me away!! But now it's starting to happen to me, too.

                          I've been trying on clothes this morning to see what fits and what doesn't. (There are clothes that are actually too big for me now...) Some of these clothes would normally not fit unless I was another 20 pounds or so lighter. I'm still having a heck of a time wrapping my head around this and am seriously contemplating changing my goals to the BMI and clothes sizes instead of weight in pounds.
