The best way to combat shin splints is to stretch your calves very well before going out. I used to suffer something awful from shin splints, especially at 220+ pounds.
If I remember right from the running book I had read, shin splints are caused from the tiny muscles on the shins working against tight calf muscles to pull your foot up to get into "foot strike" position.
Thanks Rich, they hurt SO bad, almost like a cramp, and completely Stop me from wanting to go on any further. Once I rest, they go, until I pick up the pace again. Kinda defeats the purpose. If I stay on flat ground, I'm o.k. I guess I need to stretch better than I have, or maybe longer. Thanks again!
shin splints are from the muscles that cause the front of your foot to rise( tibialis ) being out of balance with your calves. A good excercise for them is to stand flat-footed, pref. barefoot, and raise the your toes while maintaining your balance do a couple of sets of 15-20 reps every couple of days and the pain should stop occuring
I took a few advil for the first few days and then by then my body was used to the workout and they didn't bother me anymore. But stretching is a big part!
